In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Effective written and oral communication skills are important. I will assist students in combining the language arts to create effective communication skills. I will help students compose effective paragraphs and essays as well as assist them in preparing effective oral presentations.
I teach grammar as a way of honoring one's audience. I help students analyze their writing and speaking by reviewing or teaching the parts of speech and parts of the sentence, usage rules, and punctuation.
I love to read, and I love to study literature of all types. I have a masters degree in English. I want to help students learn to analyze literature on all levels, the literal as well as the interpretative. I begin with a reader response approach to help students enjoy the literature on a personal level and then move them toward closer, analytical readings by teaching literary terminology and techniques.
I love to take photographs, especially of nature, landscape, and architecture. I also love to take photos that will keep my family's history and memories alive. I use a DSLR camera, and enjoy the creative aspects of photography. I can share the basics of photography: composition and the rule of thirds, aperture and shutter, exposure, and other basic techniques. I have taken several online photography classes and am working toward certification.
I have been a musician since I was eight years. I play classical piano and organ. I can teach the basics of piano: technique, reading music, as well as the literature. I studied piano with Mrs. John Wessinger in Chapin, SC, and with Dr. Thomas Spacht and Dr. Gail Sarber at Newberry College.
