I am looking for opportunities that will allow me to live out my mission of educating people who have, for whatever reason, stopped believing in themselves to believe again. When those under my tutelage finish with me, they will be more confident in their abilities, definite of their purpose, intentional in their actions, and committed to their service to others. Building a good rapport with students and their parents is what I am great at. Because of the relationships we establish, I am able to figure out what the student's core desires are and educate them from that place. Over the years this has built confidence in the students. When a student's confidence is healthy, their grades are better.
I served as a special education teacher for 14 years in the public schools of Greenville, SC and Greenwood, SC. The rewards of these expereinces were being able to identify students' niches and train them in line with their interests, abilities, and values. I received my Masters of Education in Divergent Learning from Columbia College because I know there is a percentage of students in public education that are often misunderstood because they don't fit in with the "regular" population or don't easily conform to the rules of public education. Often when these students connect with an adult who believes in them, they will tolerate what they consider "nonsense" rules. It is my desire to serve as a tutor who will not only help in academic areas, but serve as a tutor who inspires students to conceive in their minds the greatest that they possess within them, to perceive that they are capable of maximizing their potential, and to achieve the greatest while sitting in classes they used to view as boring. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

With over 15 years in special education, one of the key factors in determining a students success in the general edcuation was the development of study skills. Students must learn and recognize how they learn and then implement those skills into their studying. I have had success in helping students identify their strengths and then using their strengths to build their study skills.
I have used with success writing strategies using Strategic Instructional Models for sentence structure and story writing strategies.
Reading- Trained in SRA Corrective Reading Series, and taught students strategies that can help them in all subjects.
