I have tutored for 4 years for a company through a title 1 grant within the school system, taught both in and out of the public school system; as well as head start for over 15 years, served as a guardian ad litem in the court systems and made visits at schools where I monitored ongoing services and training, and contracted private tutoring from home.
I am passionate about education. I believe that all aspects of education is pertinent for success. Tutoring is a reiteration of what's been taught in class, not received or understood in class; then related by a tutor in a different way. 1 on 1 tutoring gives students a sense of comfortability, peace, and trustworthiness in a familiar environment at a home setting or another quiet atmosphere at a library or chosen place of comfort and calm. For that purpose, I find that most students being tutored actually have it and get the point of the lesson.
I have compassion for every single teachable soul in which I will come in contact with. I've been there before, the only difference is that I wasn't fortunate enough to have a tutor. Please take advantage of my services as they are being offered because education has changed tremendously from my era to yours. I want to help.
Students need to understand at an early age that all letters make a sound. Letters together make words. Words make sentences. Sentences make paragraphs. Paragraphs make essays. It's like the building block of writing.
If you speak the written language correctly with proper pronunciation and enunciation, then you can write the written language correctly. You right just like you taught. When you pronounce a word correctly and slowly this process then gives you a moment to listen and hear the letter sounds of the word/s. You can then sound the spelling of that word.
Reading is fundamental therefore phonics is imperative. Children need to know that there are single letters and sounds (alphabets), then there are blends (th, ph, ch, sh) that make an entirely different sound. As a phonics coach in Orangeburg District 5 Schools, I instructed and facilitated small group and 1 on 1 with students to master this area of learning and would like to continue with other friends.
I would encourage each and every student to grab a hold of reinforcement as it is extended into you in the form of help, 1 on 1 tutoring, positive praise outside of the home, and maybe other methods. Whatever the means, understand that knowledge is power. Once you have that knowledge it can't be taken, and the power of knowledge can take you so many places and lead you in all sorts of directions. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
