I am a lifelong learner and I love to share my expertise with students. Tutoring is a way for me to work one on one with a student and address only his/her needs. I listen to the student's needs, ask questions, and develop appropriately challenging lessons individualized for the student. IMy goal in working with students is to assist them in understanding their school assignments and getting them completed with understanding while stretching their learning. My sessions include a mixture of standardized materials and my original materials that correlate to the student's curricular needs. I review what the student knows and build on this base of knowledge. Working with students who have an IEP as well as those who consistently work above their grade level has given me an understanding of which teaching techniques to use. As I work with students, I discuss test-taking skills that help them with standardized testing. I am known for my passion to succeed, caring attitude, and organization.
As a Summa Cum Laude graduate with a Masters in English, I help students in all areas related to English and Speech. I have a good grasp of technology and keep updated in my field of study. I have published several journal articles and have conducted sessions at state and national conventions. I taught English full- time for 13 years at the high school and university level. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
