About Karen

I love math, and I love tutoring. I have been tutoring since high school, and tutored in the University of West Georgia's FYRST (First Year Resident Student Tutor) program for a full academic year. I tutored all freshman studies, primarily focusing on English/Writing and Chemistry, but I also tutored whatever areas the students needed. Afterwards, I became a tutor with Richmond County, GA, for a No-Child Left Behind program as an in-home tutor. The focus was on preparing students for standardized tests under the State Curriculum, and passing state-set benchmarks.

I was also Program Director/Camp Coordinator for a non-profit Community Center in Georgia for two years. I was responsible for building the program to assist with the after-school tutoring needs of inner city children. This included building lesson plans, training instructors, and monitoring progress reports.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I mastered Algebra! It is the language of logic. I love this subject, and while in high school, I used to dream algebra and maintained an average above 100%. That's right! Throughout college, I maintained above 95% average in all math subjects (and science too). I believe that algebra can be fun. With the right tools and methods, I can help you master it too.

Bible Studies

My Bachelor of Arts degree included coursework in comparative religious studies. I attended seminary (Regent University) for two years as a student in the MA of English Bible degree program.

I was a guest lecturer for a Bible College between 2008-2012. While doing so, I developed curriculum for Spiritual Growth and Learning Seminar spring of 2012, and course PBS 101 in the Fall of 2011.

English

While tutoring as a Title I tutor for NCLB (No Child Left Behind), I had the privilege of assisting students with English and grammar. By utilizing various modalities and activities such as cartoons, journaling, and role reversal, the students gained confidence with writing long paragraphs, and improved in comprehension.

GED

While acting as Program Director for a non-profit organization, I taught a GED study course for adults preparing to take the test. Various tools were used to improve study skills, comprehension, retention, and achieving a passing score on the exam.

Reading

In my many years of tutoring reading, I have incorporated various tools to improve students' comprehension, and retention. I would generally use subjects that the student enjoyed in order to encourage them to read more, and aid in better comprehension. I also incorporated phonics for students with reading disabilities.

Writing

As a FYRST tutor in college, I assisted freshmen with drafting term papers and proofreading. I even assisted with writing term papers in different styles such as MLA, APA, Turabian, and Chicago styles. Each student I had the privilege of working with improved at least by one letter grade before the end of the semester.
