Hi, I'm Jackie. I love history and writing and inspiring that love in others. I earned my BA in Political Science from Brigham Young University. While working on my undergraduate degree, I worked as a researcher for three years under direction of a former department chair in Political science to gather primary source documents for his publications and edit his manuscripts for content clarity and grammatical accuracy. Through my work as a research assistant I learned not only depth of content for US History but also the power that comes through the personal narrative and so I love emphasizing with students the storytelling element in our nation's history.

After I completed my undergraduate degree, I earned my Masters in Teaching from Concordia University where I student taught high school English, focusing in Shakespeare and creative writing. I saw how my passion for the subject area could inspire my students to take on even the most difficult of assignments and through teaching them to consider the metacognitive elements of writing they were able to "think like the teacher" to analyze writing prompts and effectively use rubrics. During this time I also tutored students, working to help prepare individuals for their SAT and ACT through grammar and writing instruction and for AP tests in US History and Language and Composition.

My true love for and skill in teaching came through the seven years I taught middle school, instructing students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade courses in English and in 8th grade social studies. My passion for learning cultivates excitement and confidence with my students. Despite teaching over one hundred students per year, I always made learning personalized as I worked with each of my students to develop individual educational plans with them so that we could work collaboratively in a coaching relationship. I truly believe that when student needs are heard that the teacher can aid the student in striving towards the best educational outcomes. This deep desire to develop culturally responsive curriculum for students lead me to an educational doctoral program in curriculum and instruction so that I could further hone my skills in creating the best educational experiences for my students. Writing my dissertation helped me to really see how the complexities of writing can be broken down into a fairly simple process.

Through my work and education I have come to see teaching and learning as truly a great work of coaching and mentoring. As a teacher, and a tutor, I work side-by-side with my students to guide them through the learning process.
