Eastern Michigan University (Children's Lit)
Hello, I am interested in tutoring in reading. I love reading and writing so I have a solid skill set in the area. My major in college was Children's Literature and Drama with a literature minor so as a result I was exposed to many different types of adolescent and other literature. Recently I volunteered with Freedom Readers which is a program that helps children with learning to read. My tutoring method would be similar to what was used in Freedom readers where myself and the student would take turns reading and I would assist anytime we reached a troubling passage. I would also want to have the students do book reports to show me what they've gotten out of the lesson as well as vocabulary lessons to help the students understand the words within the selected material.
Before moving to the area I also volunteered in my church Sunday School in the kindergarten room and helped out with the lessons and activities each week. I also helped maintain order in the classroom. Most recently I volunteered for Vacation Bible school at a Methodist Church here in Myrtle Beach. This consisted of helping with leading my group of kids from activity to activity and remaining with them to make sure that they stayed on task then lastly leading them back to the classroom to await their parents picking them up. My preference would be to conduct the tutoring either in the privacy of my own home or in the coffee shop right next door because, but if necessary, I can most likely make arrangements to get other places that are at a greater distance that would simplify matters. The advantage of doing it out of my home or even at the coffee shop is that I would have immediate access to my own library of children's literature as well as a quiet, peaceful, and private environment to conduct our sessions in.
I think learning to read is one of the most valuable and rewarding skills anyone can have. I myself love reading and would love the opportunity to pass on this knowledge and love to other students to give them all the advantages possible for the future. What I mean by this is that by not being able to read you can lose out on many opportunities and it actually slows down your learning process. However if you can successfully learn to read not only will there be a world of opportunities opened up for you but your life will be enriched by the joy that reading can bring.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
