About Marsha

I have a BA in English and a Masters in English from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. I also have 35 years of experience teaching English in public SC high schools and 2 years of experience teaching college English classes at SC/NC universities and colleges (20+ classes).

Apparently, I can’t get enough of teaching English! My specialty is teaching high school and college level English and preparing students for the English reading, grammar, and writing sections of college entrance tests such as the SAT and ACT.

FYI: Teaching English requires systematic instruction in reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing, and speaking. The most important element, however, is developing reading skills. Good reading skills can prepare students for college and career goals. Students who have reached middle school or high school should already have an ingrained reading habit, reading for requirements and for pleasure at home on their own for an average of 30 minutes or more each day. Doing so develops higher levels of literacy than what school and/or tutors alone can accomplish. Students in middle school or high school who avoid reading on their own often have a deep-rooted problem in English that can be difficult to overcome.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

For many years, I have taught SAT and ACT Reading and Writing test-taking tips to high school English students. Many of my students who took the PSAT, the SAT, or the ACT would return from testing telling me how confident they felt when answering most of the questions they faced. Some even said they could "hear" my voice "talking" them through the answers. I taught creative writing for 20+ years at Fort Mill High School, one of SC's top-ranked high schools and was the faculty advisor for its award-winning literary magazine.

Common Core

I am a SC Certified English Teacher. And I have 20+ years experience teaching English in SC public high schools, both before and after it revised its state standards, which now closely mimic the nation's common core standards.

English

When I attended SC public schools years ago, grammar was taught heavily, as was reading. I thank my lucky stars that I learned correct grammar from excellent traditional English teachers. I also learned high levels of correct grammar usage through intense reading of traditional British and American literature. There is nothing like seeing how the best writers use the English language!

GED

I have earned a BA degree, English, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. I also have a Masters degree, English, Winthrop University.

Literature

The world's greatest literature is the best tutor anyone could ever have! Second best is a real person, a mentor or a tutor or a teacher, who introduces to some of the world's best literature and helps you understand and appreciate some of the world's best thinkers and writers.

Proofreading

I have 30+ years teaching students research paper writing. And I have 20+ years proofreading high school literary magazines. I also have 20+ college English Composition classes. Plus, I have also proofread a few masters theses and doctoral dissertations. Each candidate's paper was approved for publication and each candidate was awarded the degree for which he or she submitted the paper.

PSAT

I have taught SAT and ACT Reading and Writing test-taking tips to high school English students. I have 10+ years experience teaching students how to better take the SAT test. I have earned a BA degree, English, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC. I also have a Masters degree, English, Winthrop University.

Public Speaking

I have 15 years experience teaching Public Speaking as a high school elective course.

I have coached numerous state finalists in various state speaking contests. Last year, a student I coached won the SC Poetry Out Loud Contest. Previously, a student I coached won the SC American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Reading

The ability to read well is vital to success in college and life-long learning! I am A tutor who can help you understand and appreciate all types of reading.

SAT Reading

The SAT Reading sub-test is really difficult! High school students can improve their reading scores by taking practice SAT reading tests and getting tips from an SAT tutor, like me. I have 10+ years experience teaching students how to better take the SAT test.

SAT Writing

For many years, I have taught SAT and ACT Reading and Writing test-taking tips to high school English students. Many of my students who took the PSAT, the SAT, or the ACT would return from testing telling me how confident they felt when answering most of the questions they faced. Some even said they could "hear" my voice "talking" them through the answers.

SSAT

I am enthusiastic about and qualified to teach 8th grade students how to apply better reading and thinking skills to make higher reading scores for admission into top-level independent high schools.

With loads of experience in teaching students how to write essays, research papers, poetry, stories, and plays, I have learned how to help students improve their clarity, conciseness, and creativity. With a little help, they can write to impress the high school they wish to attend.

Vocabulary

Lots of reading automatically leads to a wealth of vocabulary knowledge, but systematic weekly vocabulary study can also help improve vocabulary. I have successfully used the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop A-H series for help prepare students for vocablary questions on college entrance tests.

Writing

I love teaching creative writing, from poetry to short stories, to novels and plays. I taught creative writing for 20+ years at Fort Mill High School, one of SC's top-ranked high schools and was the faculty advisor for its award-winning literary magazine.
