About Amy

I am currently a Special Education Consultant for Horry County Schools. I work with students who have social and behavioral deficits preventing them from accessing the regular education curriculum. I specialize in assisting students with strategies that help access learning to the best of their ability. My previous role was a Special Education Teacher for a moderate/severe classroom in an elementary school in the Myrtle Beach area. As a result, I am proficient in teaching students with disabilities in varying ranges including life skills, basic math/English, writing and daily functional skills. Prior to South Carolina teaching, my NY teaching included a middle school special education classroom for severe special needs, an eighth grade co-teacher (for math and English), and 4 summers teaching Extended School Year. I have taught in the classroom for 5 years before my current class and have experience in co-teaching ELA and math for middle school, self-contained middle school and elementary extended school year. I am familiar with New York State exams and have many tips and tricks to help you succeed on standardized testing. I am also a reading teacher for children through adults in various areas including writing and reading. I have played the flute for many years and would be interested in teaching beginner flute as it is a passion of mine. I love learning how students learn and thrive in the ability to try new teaching/learning ideas. I am currently a Special Education Consultant for Horry County Schools. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been teaching Special Education for more than 6 years and have worked with a variety of students with special needs. I have the creative skill to identify students abilities and use them to be successful in a classroom setting. Teaching students the skills for classroom success and organizational management are key components of working with students who have ADD/ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am currently a Special Education Consultant for Autism Behavior in Horry County Schools. I have worked with a variety of students with autism who have ranged in capability and academic level. I have assisted students in mainstreaming with little modification as well as students who are non-verbal and need daily living skills instruction. I have been involved in a school and community setting for students with autistic spectrum disorders and feel qualified to work with a range of students in this particular area. I am also certified in Special Education from K-9.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently teaching in an elementary classroom 1-5 for students with special needs. I teach a modified curriculum based on Common Core Standards which fits the learning style of my students. This experience has allowed me to differentiate my teaching process. I cater the lessons to many various learning abilities and levels. I have received my degree in literacy and find that this degree has been the most useful in my resource room setting for students with disabilities. Being able to use reading skills in all subject areas is extremely difficult for students with special needs and this is the type of student I gear my lessons towards. I am very skilled in developing strategies that are successful for students to use in and out of the classroom setting. I pride myself on the ability to recognize quickly the abilities and learning styles of a student in order to help them facilitate their learning.

Elementary Math

I have a teaching elementary grades K-5, special education degree, and have had successful summer tutoring in the past as well as working specifically on math skills in the upper grade level areas.

Flute

I have played the flute for 14 years and have also spent a semester in college conducting a symphonic band. I would be able to teach any beginner flute lessons up to about 4 years experience. I am familiar with the Breeze Easy books but can use any that the student would be comfortable with. I have also had experience with the piccolo and would feel comfortable teaching beginner lessons on this as well but only with flute background.

Reading

I have been teaching special education for 9 years and have a degree in literacy.

Special Needs

I have a degree in Special Education and have worked in a variety of special needs settings including self-contained, moderate/severe, ADHD, autism, emotional disabilities, social disabilities, and various other learning disabilities. I specialize in differentiated instruction and have an ability to help students learn based on their learning style regardless of mental or physical disabilities.

Study Skills

Study skills and organizational qualities are among the most important for assisting students who may have difficulty learning. A variety of strategies will be reviewed and assessed in order to maintain a positive learning environment. Students will learn the basics of creating flashcards, memory games, practice skills and a variety of other styles of studying that have proven effective in accessing educational curriculum.
