About John

I am an experienced teacher who is passionate about learning and teaching others and am committed to maintaining up to date knowledge in the field. My experience includes being responsive to the unique developmental needs and learning styles of students. I taught 6th grade math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, II, and II, and Pre-Calculus at Porter-Gaud School from 2002 to 2015. Duties included: Prepared daily lesson plans, graded tests and assignments to evaluate students’ progress, communicated objectives for all lessons, units and projects to students and their parents, integrated technology and innovative teaching, supervised the Math team at competitions, evaluated internet-based textbooks for the Math Department, and collaborated with the Math Department in developing the Middle School Math Curriculum.

At Addlestone Hebrew Academy (1999-2002), I taught middle school science, Pre-Algebra and Algebra. In addition, I worked in collaboration with the school to develop the Math curriculum for grades First through Eighth.I graduated from the College of Charleston in 1995 Summa cum Laude (3.956 over all GPA) in Political Science. I was admitted to Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, and I was aarded the 1995 Outstanding Student Award (given by the Political Science Department), and I was on the National Deans List – 1992-1995.

I consider my role as a teacher more as a coach. If the "player" doesn't do well, then the coach losses as well. I always want the student to know that I am on their side. They have to get through the material and I am here to help them in any way I can. I also want students to understand what they are doing. This is a very important part of math. It makes future math courses much easier and more enjoyable. I always ask my students to ask themselves what they are doing what they are doing, write a simple example off to the side, and "does your answer make sense?"

I was able to accomplish material that I covered in a 50 minute class in approximately 10-20 minutes of extra-help/tutoring time. You have to take the material. I will make it so you understand it and ace it - as I have done for 17 years from 6th grade through pre-calculus.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
