Syracuse University (Journalism)
I am a graduate of the Newhouse Communications School at Syracuse University. My professional experience includes being a reporter, a publicist, an advertising executive, and a screenwriter. All of those careers require the ability to express thought in a clear and dynamic way.
My tutoring experience includes: teaching grade school Korean children basic English; mentoring aspiring film and television writers; and home schooling my own kids - who all got into top universities. I feel strongly that developing communication skills is vital to a child's development, it is literally how he or she connects with the world. This is increasingly important in a society where many young people feel disenfranchised.
In addition to language skills, I have a solid working knowledge of basic math, science and history. Making that knowledge come alive is my mission and my joy. I am retired, but I still love working with eager young minds, and seeing the light go on in a child's eyes. I am a graduate of the Newhouse Communications School at Syracuse University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am the president of a motion picture production company. I was a consultant to Scriptwrights, a screenwriting workshop in Studio City, CA. I currently have three film projects under option.
One of my projects was set up at Paramount.
I am an award-winning journalist, advertising copywriter, Hollywood script consultant, and most recently -- I wrote and produced a critically acclaimed play which premiered in Charleston.
I learned how to tell stories with images while I was a photojournalist with Stars and Stripes, a daily military newspaper. There, I learned how to frame a shot and bring it to life in a darkroom. Later, as the Creative Director of a Madison Avenue ad agency, I used photography to sell a product.
Today, chemical developers and darkrooms have been replaced by Photoshop and computers. But, the essence of photography has not changed -- capturing a moment in time for all posterity. I can show your child how to do exactly that.
I was the Creative Director and head copywriter in the NY ad agency: Lambert, Dale & Bernhard.
I mentored several Hollywood screenwriters, and five of my own screenplays were optioned.
I've been a professional wordsmith ever since graduating journalism school. First, I was an award-winning news reporter. Then came a stint on Madison Avenue, where I was the creative director/copywriter on a hugely successful automotive ad campaign. Most recently, I was a script doctor in Hollywood, where it was my job to make other writers look good. Essential to all these writing disciplines is the ability to express a thought in a clear and compelling manner. I can teach a student to do that.
