About Richard

As a senior financial executive in a Fortune 200 company, I was responsible for worldwide mergers and acquisitions and numerous successful personal and corporate entrepreneurial activities. Additionally, I was, at different times, responsible for divestitures, technology transfers, liquidations, IPOs, LBOs, esoteric financing, etc. As a result, there are few aspects of finance with which I have not had hands-on experience in the real world. Since I operated at the Board of Directors level, my perspective on many subjects is both strategic and practical. Not only will you get a good perspective on your course material, but perhaps a 'leg up' when you apply for financial jobs after graduation.

My tutoring sessions are easy going and good humored. I have been tutoring and lecturing since the mid '70s and have lectured on different finance topics at a number of colleges. My schedule is extremely flexible and can be adjusted with little notice.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

Accounting was my minor in college and graduate school. I was an acquisition professional for over 30 years and was deeply involved in all forms and phases of accounting in many countries of the world. I was especially involved in managerial accounting to aid in the evaluation and pricing of acquisitions. My schedule is extremely flexible and can accommodate almost any appointment.

Business

My final position before retiring was Vice President, Mergers and Acquisitions. I was an accounting minor as an undergraduate and a finance major as a graduate student. I worked with accounting issues daily for nearly 30 years. There are few aspects of accounting with which I am not deeply acquainted.

Career Development

I graduated with a BBA in Marketing, summa cum laude and earned a MBA, with honors at Columbia University. In fourteen years, I rose from a new MBA graduate to the youngest vice President of Revlon, a fortune 100 company with world wide responsibility for mergers and acquisitions. Few people in the corporate world can match that kind of ascendancy without knowing a great deal about career development.

Economics

I have worked in many 'real world' corporate finance functions and am uniquely situated to help students to learn its nature and use. The subject may appear intimidating, but, like many other subjects and challenges, it is really not as difficult as one would think.

Marketing

I received my BBA summa cum laude in marketing, and an MBA from Columbia with a minor in International marketing. Subsequently, I worked in marketing for Seagram's, a major distiller and distributor of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. My final corporate job entailed acquisition due diligence which, for Revlon, a famous consumer marketing company, was critical for all new potential acquisition candidates. I have owned and operated small successful companies, highly dependent on focused and insightful marketing.

Microsoft Excel

Over the past 20 years or so I have used spreadsheet analysis continually in the course of my employment. As a merger and acquisition professional, I have created thousands of excel spread sheet through the year and at the present time. I can do Excel in my sleep.

Microsoft Windows

I began programming computers in engineering school in 1963. I have used MS Windows consistently since it was introduced in '95. Windows was on at least 4 of my personal computers and about 15 on the business computers in my office. I am usually the "go to guy' when others are having trouble with their machines. I have built and re-installed Windows in at least 8 different computers and maintain both the hardware and software on all computers. I have extensive experience in Windows XP (which still works perfectly AND Windows 7. My knowledge generally transcends the casual, professional and/or the recreational computer user.

Public Speaking

As a senior financial professional for many years, I was required to make innumerable presentations to customers, shareholders, boards of directors, employee groups, etc. I have lectured at College of Charleston, Columbia Univ., taught several courses at Katherine Gibbs School and gave a number of courses in the US Army. Public speaking does not lend itself to a specific subject but is a skill related to the organization and presentation of information to a multitude of listeners. I have been doing public speaking in many different arenas and many different topics.
