About Tristan

I love de-mystifying the computer and helping people understand and enjoy their computer, whether it's at their home or work. I make each tutoring session a fun experience as you get to know your machine and find out everything that it can do for you! You'll gain the skills you need to utilize your software effectively, and you'll receive vital advice about protecting yourself from hackers and viruses. I also teach PC owners how to do regular maintenance to keep a machine running smoothly.

I have a B.A. in Computer Science and 10+ years of experience repairing, building, and trouble-shooting computers, with operating systems ranging from Windows to Linux. If you are interested, I can also teach you how to open up your computer and replace/upgrade parts yourself.

I have been working as an IT technician since 2004, starting with general help desk and working up to Server and Network Administration. I have a desire to assist people in understanding more about computers and how they work; both physically as well as your interactions with the PC through software, so you can use your computer more fully according to your needs.

I am willing to make house calls for your tutoring needs and would love to be your "local computer helper," but I am also available for online tutoring sessions of 1 or 2 hours.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Linux

I have been using many of the core distributions since around 2004 a sampling of which includes Fedora, Slackware, Debian, Arch, OpenSuse (although most recently focusing on Debian and its derivatives and Arch Linux). I am very familiar with the terminal and how the macrocosm of the Linux desktop is built up from the kernel to the graphical user interface and have done multiple manual installs (terminal only) of Arch on various machines. I also have a passion for retro-fitting older hardware with slimmed (or child specific) Linux distros to be used with kids for education.

Microsoft Outlook

My very first PC was a 386 which ran DOS. Even with the arrival of graphical interfaces in Windows 3.11 and Windows 95 a lot of software was still written for DOS and required you to restart the PC into DOS. I learned a lot of navigation and commands in that time. I still use DOS commands daily for diagnostics and even computer management, although DOS as an OS no longer exists and is strictly a shell in Windows in the form of the command prompt.

Microsoft Windows

I have been an IT technician since 2004 and have mastered most of the Microsoft Windows operating systems all the way back to Windows 98 (and including Windows 10). I have above average knowledge of key areas of the registry as well as excellent navigation skills in the operating system. A good part of my job as help desk technician over the years was to also instruct the users I supported, not just fix the issue for them.

Networking (Computer)

I have attended multiple classes on Networking in my undergraduate studies covering the OSI model and communications. I have also worked as a server and network administrator for a small business for multiple years in my career and was in charge of the company network as well as multiple corporate customers' networks. I have gleaned a lot of good real world experience through this and am able to understand infrastructures I encounter and also troubleshoot networking issues accurately.
