Thank you for looking at my profile. I've been tutoring professionally for four years.
I have always loved Mathematics and Algebra and feel strongly that, it is the subject to "teach" you how to think. It is also the basis for many of the sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, etc.
As a former mechanical Engineer for General Electric (8 years) I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central New England College and also did some graduate classes at WPI.
I have been homeschooling many years and my college kids now tell me now that they are very glad I taught them Algebra!
An all too common weakness in many of their peers is that they did not have good grounding in Math.
I believe a Math student needs to have understanding of the principles and sometimes that may involve backing up a bit. "Getting it" is everything!
I Teach to learn. I teach to succeed. I teach to think.
So give me the chance to do this for you.
This will make all the difference in your SAT scores, too! Thank you for looking at my profile. I've been tutoring professionally for four years.

Clare is tutoring two of my sons. One for honors Algebra and the other for honors geometry. Unfortunately they seemed to have gotten classroom teachers who don't explain things very well. Clare is really helping them understand and succeed. My boys feel comfortable with her and are really learning! Their grades have improved a lot in just a few lessons and they have much more confidence in their understanding of what is being taught. Clare communicates quickly and clearly and has been a pleasure to work with.
Mrs. K is very thorough and prepared. She easily adjusts and teaches the student both through her method and any different approach the student may take to solve the math problem. She also lets the student know their strengths and weaknesses which is very important for prepping for this specific test. I would highly recommend her for any student studying for the GRE.
Clare is an excellent tutor! Meticulous in making sure all aspects of math are covered and done well! Patient and thoroughly going through all Joseph's work. A great job!
Clare is always so patient with my daughter. My daughter says that she understands Clare's explanations, and she is helping her get back on track quickly.
This homeschooling mom has been thrilled with Mrs. K. She logically and thoroughly presents math to my son. She also holds us accountable for completing what is assigned. Result? A kid that understands and is interested in the subject and a mom who doesn't feel like she is short changing her son. Great choice.
When I first took my SATs, I scored significantly lower than expected, and I knew that I would need a tutor to help me reach my goal. Clare taught me step by step basics and not only helped me for the SATs, but in school as well. I am so grateful for my time spent with her. She helped me gain 90 points on the SAT, which exceeded all expectations. If I ever need help again, I know I can count on Clare to get me to where I am supposed to be.
Clare was easy to get in touch with and very willing to work around my work schedule. We did only math specific GRE work. Together we did reviews of basic concepts and practice problems, and she was very willing to help me work through at home problems that I was struggling with as well. Overall, I think this was beneficial for my scores!
I recently had to take the GRE test. I have not used this math in many years and going to Clare help me tremendously. She was great at going back to the basics and teaching me what I need to know. My test score went up 15 points after my tutoring session. Clare was exceptional and I would recommend her to anyone!!
I contacted Clare at the worse possible time - the same day an assignment was due. What's more, it was on a holiday. Clare agreed to meet with me, showed extreme patience, and made sure I understood the assigned equation. She also reviewed similar equations to help me to understand the quadratic functions relating to the graphing of a parabola. The second appointment had to be rescheduled, and Clare did not hesitate to accommodate me. Only two appointments, and this turned everything in the right direction. Money well spent; I am well pleased.
Mrs. Clare is such a nice lady. She figured out what I didn't understand and effectively started teaching me at a pace and speed that I could follow along with. She is a VERY good tutor. Thank you Mrs. Clare!
Clare is easy to work with and very responsive. We have noticed an immediate improvement in grades and in an understanding of the subject matter (geometry). We highly recommend Clare.
Clare is a great fit as a tutor for my daughter. She has engaged in a professional and kind manner and is really helping my daughter gain a better understanding of her class work. We have already seen an improvement in test results. Kudos!
Clare has helped us uncover the underlying source of my son's math struggles. We worked with many tutors who thought that guided homework would make the difference. Clare understands that we must work harder to find the source of the issue and practice until we have resolved the foundational confusion. We are very thankful for this wonderful tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 is a very exciting course; here we begin abstract thinking. But a good grounding in the fundamental math operations and problem solving techniques are critical. Being well practiced in these earlier concepts including fractions and factoring are absolutely necessary. Trouble in Algebra could indicate some lack of prior concepts and we may need to find this so that we can move forward successfully. Success in Algebra is also critical to good SAT scores - and good SAT scores get scholarships. Word problems are very important and I have established my own "word problem rules" to help students succeed.
I am very focused on the little things and taking baby steps as we work through solutions. It's no fun being lost... we all hate that; my approach to success is slow and steady wins the race.
I have two children in college who have encouraged me to teach or tutor Math for a long time. They lived through the "word problem rules" and the "show your work or no credit" and now brag to their peers who wish they had had a teacher like me. They got to college and saw how lost many of their peers are because of poor grounding in the concepts. I don't want that to happen to you. If it already has, we need to find what is missing so that you can move on successfully and you CAN!
Algebra 2, of course builds on Algebra 1 and takes it further. Trouble in either Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 could indicate some holes in the foundation principles and practice of them. Sometimes we need to sure up foundation cracks before we move on. Success in Algebra is critical to good SAT scores - and good SAT scores get scholarships.
I am very focused on the little things and taking baby steps as we work through solutions. I'll say it over and over: "show your work".
Elementary Math is often the source of later problems in Math. It is so critical that concepts are understood and that exercises are practiced. Addition is putting together; subtraction is taking away. Multiplication is repeated addition and division is repeated subtraction.
With younger children in particular, manipulatives and pictures and "building it" are very important. I developed my own "job chart Math" with my children when they were young and non-traditional Math such as that can be a great addition to curriculum (or a substitution for some children).
Word problems are very important and I have developed my own word problem rules to set a pattern of success. Lots of practice with fractions is absolutely necessary prior to Algebra. Don't wait until a child is struggling in Algebra before you get help. From Fact families to fractions and radicals I can help your child get grounded in Math through 8th grade.
As a home-school mother I taught my 4 children to read. A phonics based reading program is critical to developing good readers who can go the distance and enjoy reading. Reading level should be determined by developmental readiness and not age. Phonics is so important to developing all important thinking skills which will be important throughout education and life and I think it is a particularly good preparation for Math. I have a very good sense for "how to teach" a child to read because I have a very good sense for how a child's thinking must develop. I have taught children with ADHD and visual processing disorders. The basics from the bottom up adapted to a child's learning style is my approach to teaching. With some techniques from various programs I can teach your child to read confidently and then when he/she is ready his/her reading will take off! I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Central New England College and also did some graduate classes.
Middle school Math builds on primary knowledge and skills and then prepares the student's mind for Algebra. Firm grounding in all of the elementary principles is essential to moving on. Next comes early algebra and I always focus on methods and showing your work and understanding "why" you did that.
Please read my other Math subject's description also.
