About Colleen

After working in retail management for 10 years I went back to college to pursue my true passion-teaching. I became a certified early childhood teacher in 2009 and have worked as a reading tutor, math tutor, classroom substitute, media center substitute, and after school assistant. I have worked as an ESOL teacher for grades kindergarten-8th for three years. I pride myself on dedication to the field of education and hold my students to high standards. I also received my Master's degree in learning and technology in 2012.

I base my tutoring sessions on the needs of my students and start with reviewing what they know about the subject. It is important that the student starts out confident and builds on previous knowledge to reach their full potential. I keep records of each tutoring session and provide supportive feedback to students and progress reports to parents.

I offer flexible tutoring sessions and can tutor online or in person. I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy.

I look forward to helping your student reach their highest potential!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in early childhood education. I have served as a reading and math tutor both through my current employer and privately. I believe in utilizing hands-on activities with my students to keep them actively engaged in their learning.

Phonics

My capstone project for my master's degree was based on the connection between phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The project consisted of 10 lessons that focused on the use of phonics to improve fluency. The unit was tested successfully with a group of third grade students with 98% of the students showing improvement.
