The University of South Carolina Upstate (B.A. Middle Level Ed)
Columbia College, SC (MEd)
I'm Samantha! I graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Middle Level Education with an emphasis in Mathematics and Social Studies. Recently I have graduated from Columbia College with a Master's degree in Divergent Learning. Currently I am going through a program through Xavier University to get certified to teach Montessori. I have been teaching 7th grade math and pre-algebra for four years and absolutely love it! This upcoming year I will be teaching 7th and 8th grade math including some Algebra 1.
I knew in the third grade that I wanted to become a teacher. I loved the atmosphere of a classroom and have always enjoyed helping others. When I was in middle school I had some of the most influential math teachers that made the class enjoyable and also very easy to understand. These teachers became more than teachers but mentors throughout the rest of my educational path. Due to this, I try to give my students the same experience when they are in my classroom! While in school I was always enjoyed math more than other subjects because the teachers made it engaging and comprehensible when teaching the material and they were always willing to go the extra mile when I asked for help or clarification. Due to this I try to take the same mindset into my classroom and also my tutoring sessions to make learning more enjoyable and comprehensible.
I have three years of tutoring experience all the way from first grade to ninth grade Algebra 1. I typically work one-on-one with a student to ensure that they are able to receive the extra attention that is needed to meet their individual needs. I use lesson plans that introduce the topic in a fun and creative way that makes sense to the student and gets them engaged with the material. Throughout the lesson I ensure that there is multiple examples in practice in order to give the student the opportunity to ask questions and try again until the concept is fully understood. I believe in different learning styles based on the student's needs to accommodate how they learn best.
I want to benefit the students that I work with as much as possible, therefore I am welcome to any resources or suggestions students or parents can provide. I am easy to reach and will always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson! I'm Samantha! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught seventh and eighth grade math for four years. I also have tutored Algebra 1 for two years. I have many resources to ensure success rate and provide extra assistance outside of the regular classroom setting.
I have played tennis for 18 years. I was #1 varsity for my high school for five years. I also played Division 1 for USC Upstate for a year. I began playing in a 3.5 USTA League after leaving it competitively. I coached JV & Varsity tennis in Spartanburg for 2 years and began a juniors coaching program for kids aged 10-14.
