If you select me as your tutor, you will be the recipient of my 30 years of teaching experience in high schools and at the university level. I have also worked in academic publishing, testing, and gifted and talented programs. My varied and extensive experience means I will have the skills to develop your study skills and your content knowledge.
I have worked extensively with reading specialists and have a strong grasp of changes in education including: standardized testing, higher level thinking skills, evidence based essays, research paper instruction, Advanced Placement History (European, World, U.S., GED Social Studies Examination, and Common Core Standards. My curriculum/course designs have earned me prizes and honors from bodies like the College Board, GED, National Endowment for the Humanities, and private foundations.
If you read between the lines you will know that I have taught all kinds of courses under the umbrella of history, international relations, politics, humanities/literature, philosophy, even public speaking. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my career I have developed curricula and taught the following: History of World Religions; units on various parts of the Bible; Philosophy; the impact of history on religion; theology. My tutoring approach depends on each student but can include reading, essays and thesis statement, research.
If you are looking for a tutor who has taught ancient western and world history for many years, I should be your choice. I have also taught AP World History which includes ancient and medieval history. I have also taught a high school student for University of Connecticut credit in ancient and medieval Europe which was a yearlong course where my credentials and curriculum were submitted to the University of Conn. for approval.
My long interest in film led me to take a course in History and Film while in graduate school which encouraged my critical and rigorous examination of film content in nearly all courses I taught for 30 years.
I have taken several courses offered by a Political Science Department which has allowed me to address political theory, government, and international relations in many of the courses I have taught.
While teaching at the high school level, I initiated a debate team which I coached and traveled to tournaments with for 8 years. In a subsequent teaching position, I coached debate and traveled nationally with the school's NFL Team. In my third high school teaching job, I initiated a Model U.N. Program and taught Public Speaking. In the second year of teaching Public Speaking, avid students wanted me to devise an advanced course so for the first time the school had 2 different public speaking courses.
As a teacher of history from the ancient period to the present, I have always incorporated religion into my courses. I have also taught entire units on Bible study which even included a unit on "Women of the Old Testament", along with full courses on the History of World Religions. As an educator I attended several workshops/speaker series on religious study.
