Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

During my career I have developed curricula and taught the following: History of World Religions; units on various parts of the Bible; Philosophy; the impact of history on religion; theology. My tutoring approach depends on each student but can include reading, essays and thesis statement, research.

Classics

If you are looking for a tutor who has taught ancient western and world history for many years, I should be your choice. I have also taught AP World History which includes ancient and medieval history. I have also taught a high school student for University of Connecticut credit in ancient and medieval Europe which was a yearlong course where my credentials and curriculum were submitted to the University of Conn. for approval.

Film

My long interest in film led me to take a course in History and Film while in graduate school which encouraged my critical and rigorous examination of film content in nearly all courses I taught for 30 years.

Political Science

I have taken several courses offered by a Political Science Department which has allowed me to address political theory, government, and international relations in many of the courses I have taught.

Public Speaking

While teaching at the high school level, I initiated a debate team which I coached and traveled to tournaments with for 8 years. In a subsequent teaching position, I coached debate and traveled nationally with the school's NFL Team. In my third high school teaching job, I initiated a Model U.N. Program and taught Public Speaking. In the second year of teaching Public Speaking, avid students wanted me to devise an advanced course so for the first time the school had 2 different public speaking courses.

Religion

As a teacher of history from the ancient period to the present, I have always incorporated religion into my courses. I have also taught entire units on Bible study which even included a unit on "Women of the Old Testament", along with full courses on the History of World Religions. As an educator I attended several workshops/speaker series on religious study.

Social Studies

As someone highly qualified in the study of history with a broad education in economics, politics, philosophy, and other areas, I am a social studies or social science educator. Recently I was on the 6 person National Social Studies Committee for Content Validity Review for the new 2014 GED Exam in Social Studies which now reflects the Common Core movement.
