Bachelor of Arts (Business, Accounting)
I am a 57 year-old Christian woman who successfully home-schooled her three daughters for 10 years (all subjects through high school) and also home-schooled/tutored two other girls for their 7th and 8th grade years. I have experience tutoring elementary math, phonics and reading, high school writing and English literature, biology, algebra, geometry, accounting, anatomy, and U.S. history, as well as all middle school subjects. In addition, I have worked with several students of varying ages teaching phonics based reading. I am experienced with assisting students with test prep, including GED, TEAS, ASVAB, SAT, and ACT. Many of my students have had IEPs or learning challenges. I enjoy discovering their needs and the best methods for allowing them to succeed.
Prior to homeschooling, I worked as a public accountant for several years before moving into the corporate world, where I was the general ledger accountant for a multi-million dollar bulk handler of oil, tallow, caustic soda, etc. I then moved into management for an electric utility company for 11 years before settling into home-schooling.
All 3 of my children had different learning styles (visual, auditory, and tactile), and the two other students I home-schooled for 7th and 8th grades both had learning disabilities. In the first year, they went from testing two to four years below grade level to testing above grade level on their CAT tests by the end of the year.
I have also run a church based homeschool cooperative with children ranging from first grade up to 11th grade. All of the students were at risk of failure in public school, however, they all were able to turn their education around and rise to at least grade level or well above grade level by year's end, as evidenced by their standardized test results. All were below or well below grade level at the outset.
My expertise is in identifying my students' strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles to enable me to quickly tailor my lessons to suit their needs. Thus, time is not wasted, and my students stay engaged and enthusiastic.
I have an extensive library of books, curriculum, software, and educational games. We moved 65 book boxes with us in our last move. I have a passion for teaching and for children/young people. I would welcome the opportunity to mentor and teach you or your child(ren) for success, as well as to instill a love of learning. I would be happy to discuss your needs and what I can offer with you. Paula was a great tutor! She was always prepared and brought extra printouts or had websites for my daughter to help her beyond the notes and book work from school. Unfortunately, Paula moved and we had to find another tutor. I would highly recommend Paula for anyone looking for a tutor!
Thank you Donna! I miss your daughter very much. I hope she has a great tutor this year.
Paula completed an assessment of my child's math abilities during our first visit. She reviewed and gave me immediate feedback. She was able to pinpoint specific areas that needed work, and we set up tutoring sessions (time/content) that day based on her input related to my child's work. Thank you, Paula. I couldn't have been more pleased with our first session.
My daughter felt comfortable and is motivated to learn more. She's already feeling more confident is eager to continue working with Paula.
Thank you. I appreciate her eagerness to learn!
Paula really takes her time explaining concepts that can be tough to understand. My son is learning a lot from her!
Miss H is very kind and patient. She's a no nonsense teacher but she makes learning very enjoyable. She first tested me to gain a better understanding of where I stood. She has a vast knowledge of different teaching styles that I think makes her a great tutor for all ages. I look forward to continuing lessons with her.
I contacted Paula because my son is struggling in math. She seems to be very knowledgeable. So far so good. I think this is a new beginning for my son.
Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to leave feedback. It not only helps me, but it is very helpful for those looking to find the perfect tutor. I enjoyed working with Christian and look forward to continuing.
My grandson tells me that Paula is helping him very much in math. Good job, Paula!
Paula was very courteous and knowledgeable about the subject matter; she made the learning experience positive. I was having great difficulty grasping the content and she took time to walk me through it step by step. I would use Paula again and recommend her to others.
The reviews I receive after each session is very helpful. My son struggles with math, sometimes the tutor reminds him of things he may have forgotten. Also very helpful in what they are currently doing in class at school. Paula showed my son a neat strategy for remembering his 9 multiplication tables.
Thank you so much for the kind and thoughtful review you posted. I enjoy the feedback, and it also helps others who are trying to decide if I might be a good fit to tutor them or their child.
This was by far the best experience. Paula H. contacted me within days of putting in my request. She met me at a public Library close to my home. From the moment I met her I was very relaxed, she was so nice and non judgmental, as I am a middle-age woman trying for my GED. She found my weaknesses and my strong points. She has the right tools that will help you succeed. Paula sent me to a web site that helped tremendously, she sent me Packets over email and answered any questions that I had in a timely manner. I never had to wait longer than a couple of hours for any answers to my questions. I learned more in just days from the tools she gave me, than I did in the months of going to Adult Ed. Paula was always very nice and respectful, and I would have to say she is the best tutor out there.
Paula has formed a bond of friendship with our family. As a tutor Paula is consistent and expects the student to give 100% without being overbearing or demanding. She wants to see the students success and I believe that is why she is a tutor. I would recommend Paula as a tutor, she is punctual, reliable and very nice.
Paula is the perfect tutor for my grandson. She was very timely in contacting us initially and was able to begin sessions with him immediately. She established a rapport with him and he has started to make some progress. She has evaluated his strengths and weaknesses and has written a letter to his teacher requesting information. I think we are finally on the right track!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Most students find Algebra so easy once it is properly taught for understanding. In order to succeed, math facts and foundational concepts must be mastered first, and we can do that quickly and easily with my programs. I have considerable experience teaching Algebra to a variety of ages and students with different learning styles. Math can become enjoyable again!
I have a BA in Businees with a concentration in Accounting. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and am a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. I have worked for a Public Accounting firm, as well as on the managerial Accounting Staff of a multi-million dollar bulk handler. In addition, I worked for years for a public utility directed under the VP of Operations as a high level multi-department manager. Most recently, I have been a homeschool mother and private tutor. I have experience tutoring numerous Business courses at the college level.
I homeschooled my three children for all subjects through high school, beginning in third grade. In addition, I have tutored a first grade boy in Math through the second grade, as well a third grade girl in Math. I was commended by her teacher, who recommended me to another parent, who also used me to help their son. I tutored him into the sixth grade for Math, Science, Language Arts, and only occasionally for Social Studies. I am very familiar with the SC standards by grade and am more than qualified to teach them. I have an extensive educational library. I am skilled at adjusting lessons to the level of the child, presenting materials in a fun, engaging manner, and offering encouragement as needed.
I have extensive experience tutoring and teaching elementary math at all levels.
I have experience tutoring Accounting 1 & 2, Management Accounting, QuickBooks, & Excel.
I have numerous prep books, plus assessment tests, and access to an online video and interactive teaching program. I have helped 5 individuals study for their test, and have experience teaching all 5 of the GED subject test areas. I can guide you in ways to help you study and practice on your own to save you money, or I can be your sole source of instruction, depending on your needs. I tailor to each students learning style, schedule, and budget. My goal is for you to succeed!
Are you in need of a Geometry tutor for summer school, high school,or for a college class? Besides teaching my own 3 girls and another student in our home school, I also tutored the older sibling of one of my regular students to help her get a high enough grade on her final exam for Geometry to pass for the year. We spent 2 1/2 hours with some video lessons I have, along with some intensive practice exercises. She made an 85% on her final exam (second highest in her class, actually)and passed the class. She commented that she learned more in that 2 1/2 hours than she had in the first half of the entire year.
I have also tutored Geometry over the summer, helping a rising 12th grader with 2 online credit recovery courses: one for English, and the other for Geometry. He was able to pass both with A's and move on to 12th grade.

I have experience tutoring Accounting 1 & 2, Management Accounting, QuickBooks, & Excel.
Over the past three years, I have successfully taught several children to read using a variety of phonics programs. They range in age from 6 to 12 years old. Alpha-Phonics, Phonics Tutor, and Ultimate Phonics are a few of the programs I use. These programs work well with struggling readers as well as those suffering with dyslexia. I also supplement these programs with Sound Bytes, decodeable readers, and apps to keep things exciting and improve fluency.
I have considerable experience helping middle school students recover their poor math grades. I have found the most common problem is that the math facts were never mastered, especially upper times tables. I have an award winning program I use to help students quickly and almost effortlessly learn them.
I also give an assessment test to determine learning gaps. Common problems are long division, all fraction operations, and the relationship between ratios or proportions, fractions, decimals and percents. Once facts are mastered, these once daunting concepts become fairly easy.
I have many worksheets, texts, computer programs and apps to help with various learning styles.
I have been directing a church sponsored homeschool co-operative for the past year, in addition to tutoring. In the co-op, we had a first grader who had attended public kindergarten the previous year but was not yet reading, though she did know the letters and some sounds. I worked with her using software, workbooks, and graded readers and she is now reading at grade level with understanding. I have also been tutoring a fifth grader who was reading at early first grade level. She was just tested and is reading at a late third grade level, with instruction only once per week.
I have worked with at risk public school students teaching them how to study, take notes, manage their time, and organize their papers.
I have successfully tutored a woman for this test. It is quite similar to the GED test, which I have tutored numerous times. The Science for this test is a bit more involved than the GED, but I am certified and have taught high school Sciences. I have the ATI Study Guide for the TEAS, as well as the McGraw-Hill practice test books as resources to share.
