I have been a math tutor and teacher for 11 years. I began my teaching career with The Princeton Review by teaching and tutoring SAT math. Since then, I have taught in the public school system of New York City, in a private school in Westchester County and, now, in a private school in Greenville, SC. I am certified to teach both at the grades 5 through 9 level (middle school) and at the grades 7 through 12 level (high school). I am a very energetic, active teacher in the classroom and I put a lot of sincere caring into the way I tutor and teach. The head of my department thinks enough of me to make me the only teacher in the school who teaches four Honors courses.
I have tutored hundreds of students in math - some as early as Elementary School, through Middle School and into Upper School. Most of my students learn with me throughout the school year - some even continue during the summer break. I tutor students in their school curricula but, in addition to year-round tutoring of grade-based curricula, I specialize in training for the SAT and ACT exams. I have helped students earn high scores on those important, college-entry exams - some greatly exceeding their expectations.
I care very much about the students that I teach and tutor. My style is supportive and nurturing. I know what a struggle math can be for many and, through patient modeling, I build a student's confidence and achieve excellent results. The students that I tutor are very loyal and I tutor many students over a period of many years.
"We have known Marty B. for well over 10 years. When it came time for an SAT math tutor, we called him and no one else. He has always made our son feel comfortable in a way that allows him to engage fully in the work. Our son looked forward to his weekly sessions with Marty, yes, hard to believe a 17 year old looked forward to his math tutor! The ACT and SAT scores CLEARLY reflected Marty's influence, considering that he scored far higher on Math than all other subjects on the tests. Marty was a HUGE, positive influence in helping our son find the self-confidence he needed to succeed in that difficult, junior year. And the inspiring footnote to our experience with Marty is our son's desire to someday, teach High School math!"

"Marty B. has worked with our son for about five months total in preparation for the ACT and SAT exams. In weekly sessions Marty tutored our son in Mathematics, test taking skills and study habits. In all those months our son never once complained about the lessons but instead praised Marty as "the best teacher he ever had", as a "really nice person", as "very helpful" and "very clear with his explanations". My husband and I observed that Marty was exceptionally patient but also firm when Adam needed to work a bit harder. He was encouraging and understanding but also had expectations. He was clear and precise, worked very hard and guided his student well so that all the necessary material was covered. We all liked Marty very much. We highly recommend Marty B. as a Math tutor for ACT and SAT exams."

"Marty B. has been such a wonderful tutor for our son Ian. Marty taught Ian techniques that enabled him to improve his scores in all three SAT areas. Ian had previously taken the Princeton Review course, but his SAT score only increased by 80 points from his PSAT score. After 7 tutoring sessions with Marty, however, Ian's score jumped 130 points. Marty's encouragement, warmth, and gentle nature proved the perfect fit for Ian. We only wish we had contacted Marty earlier, as his tutoring proved so much more effective than the review course."

"Marty B.'s skills as a tutor are multilayered. He was able to help reduce my son's anxiety by his calm, consistent and thorough approach to the material He made the test a very manageable event. We hoped for a 25% increase in his math scores on the SAT, we never expected the 40% increase he achieved. We believe his results were directly related to his work with Marty and the increase in these scores clearly provided my son with college opportunities that would not have been afforded to him without these results."

"We have used Marty B. as a Math tutor for our daughter for two years and without his assistance she would never have passed Math 1 and 2 in High School plus both Regents exams. He has the patience of a saint and is a pleasure to deal with. She has gone from a 65 student in Math to an 85 student. We are now using him for assistance with SAT and ACT testing as well . . ."

"Marty B. isn't just an excellent math tutor, he's also a very personable one. He's warm, outgoing, and gets along easily with students and parents alike. He helped our older daughter prepare for her math SATs, and then he tutored our younger daughter in 10th-grade math. He's strong in every phase, and the results speak for themselves."

"From the first day I shook his hand I knew there was something special about him. Marty B. is a sensitive, caring man and tutor. Marty has a unique talent of making my child comfortable enough to expand her mind and create the right environment to learn. In one semester my daughter has improved her math grade from a C+ to a B+! THANK YOU MARTY!"

"My daughter and I are happy to recommend Marty's services as a tutor. As a matter of fact, the competence and comfort level he afforded my daughter in Math goes beyond tutoring. He has been a GREAT instructor. His thoroughness and calm demeanor made each session a pleasure."

Very patient and explains things in a manner that I can relate to which makes it easier for me to understand. Well prepared so the lesson flowed and felt easy. Martin is a compassionate person and has a good energy about him.
SAT Math prep with our daughter. He suggested more efficient problem solving, not just concepts. Should help her time management during the test. Looking forward to additional sessions. Prompt and professional.
Marty had a good rapport with my son from the start. He was patient, asked questions and reviewed the material. He was not condescending, and was reassuring when my son made an error. He arrived promptly and has a pleasant, approachable demeanor. Seems like a good fit!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The ACT math section is much more like a straight-forward high school math test than the SAT math section. It tests the students on their knowledge of math subjects up through Algebra2/Trigonometry. Students who have been strong in math in high school can expect to do well on the ACTs. Generally, tutoring for this portion of the exam requires a comprehensive review of the student's high school math courses. If a student has struggled in math during high school, they can still achieve great success on this test - they just have to be willing to work hard and to take many practice tests.
I teach Geometry more than any other course that I teach. I am the only teacher at my school who teaches Honors Geometry - 3 courses. Geometry requires a different set of skills than any math subject up to this point. It is much more of a visual skill. I very much enjoy the challenge of geometry problems and I'm very enthused to help a student see the patterns in a geometry solution. For those of you struggling with proofs, I completely understand. Writing a proof is like building a logical puzzle. I can help you understand and see the bigger picture.
Basically, the math on the SAT is Middle School math – but the questions are hard because the questions are very TRICKY!! If you learn some of the tricks, you can learn to beat the SAT at its own game. The company that makes the SAT is the Educational Testing Service (ETS). ETS takes advantage of students. It makes many of the wrong answer choices look like the right answer choices.
The key to success on the Math SATs is all just a matter of knowing the right way to take these tricky questions apart. Once you can attack them in the correct way, you'll start to see that SAT Math questions aren't really math "problems" in any sense that you're used to. Instead, they're more like games. That’s why you have to prepare for the SAT Math test properly – knowing how to answer the questions quickly and accurately and knowing what to look for in the “tricky” questions.
