Hi. I’m Susan and I recently retired from teaching English. I have taught all grades 6-12 in ELA and in American Lit., British Lit as well as Humanities. I am a National Writing Project fellow and have taught creative writing as well as writing for research projects. I am also certified in ESOL and worked with English language learners in grades K-12. In addition to working in local middle schools and high schools, I have also taught in international schools in Shanghai and in Taiwan.

Even though I’m retired, I am still enthusiastic about teaching. I work with Homebound students and thoroughly enjoy working one to one with students. I can facilitate a student’s learning with specific lessons, essential questions and by checking understanding. I communicate well with students. When I have worked with Homebound students, they have told me that they were nervous before they met me, but by the end of the first session they are relaxed, and thank me for caring. I think my strengths include empathy and advocacy for students. While I have high standards for myself to help students achieve academically, I also have an “ all in” attitude with my students. I care about their success and about their gaining confidence in their abilities. I hope I will have an opportunity to work with students soon.

When I was eight years old, I read Heidi and the book opened my imagination to travel, to culture. to history and to the beautiful scenery in the story. I still convey my enthusiasm for reading through creative lessons for students. I am also a National Writing Project fellow and have enjoyed incorporating the writing process with students in ways to help them feel like they are in a community of writers. As language continually evolves, so does grammar. I not only teach students basic grammar, but I teach them to use tools to edit their writing. Literature is a reflection of all human experience. The conflicts in literature give students opportunities to search within themselves for answers to complex situations. Litera
