I’m Tabitha! I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a focus in Mathematics. In high school I saw that most of my teachers didn’t explain mathematical concepts very well, so I had to teach myself. That helped me to understand WHY math works the way that it does. It truly gave me a passion for math that I enjoy sharing with others! That experience has shaped my method of tutoring. If one explanation doesn’t help a student, I try to find another way to show and explain the concept until I find the way that will help the individual student best!
I worked as a substitute teacher in multiple high schools for five years. During that time, I had several long term math assignments in which I taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, Probability and Statistics, AP Calculus, and SAT Prep. During that time I came to appreciate that the best way I can help a student is to work with him or her one-on-one so that I can customize the material to his or her individual needs. So I decided to focus on tutoring.
I have over 10 years of experience as a math tutor. For the last three years, I have regularly tutored math and reading, with a company, to students whose ages ranged from Kindergarten through College freshman. During that time, I have developed a routine that helps me to get to know the students well so I know how to help them: during the first session or two, I ask a lot of questions to find out what foundations the student knows. That helps me figure out what background topics I need to cover with the student, and in what way, to really help him or her understand what he or she is working on currently.
During the last two years I have also been the SAT/ACT Instruction Manager with that same company. I have learned how to customize a curriculum to fit each student so he or she learns the quickest and most efficient way to work each problem. I encourage several test taking strategies while I reinforce the topics that the student will see on the SAT or ACT. I have personally seen up to a 290 point increase on the SAT and a 10 point increase on the ACT with students that I have worked with.
I love seeing a student’s joy when he or she understands a concept that was previously a struggle; it’s what I call the “ah-ha” moment. I love seeing a student’s confidence grow and watching him or her succeed. I do understand that it can be hard to find the right fit at times, so I would be happy to answer any questions before scheduling a lesson. I am easy to reach and will respond to your message ASAP.
