About Lydia

I specialize in Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint software programs, plus general computer use lessons. Another specialty is fine art such as photography and drawing. I can also teach general cooking, meal planning, baking, and cocktail making.

About me: I am always thirsty for a new challenge. With hard work and focus, I earned a degree in Communication Design, graduating Summa Cum Laude last May, at the age of 43. Prior to that, I earned a General Studies degree in 2013, also graduating with honors. Because I was a more mature student going back to school with a strong drive to succeed, I passionately utilized every possible learning tool that I could find, so that I would not only know the material, but also have a greater chance at retaining it. Some of the methods I used, that I may use while tutoring, were educational videos and software applications, mock design projects, flash cards, note taking, recording of lectures, listening to those lectures again, and forming study groups outside of class.

Though these methods worked for me, I believe that each student learns differently. The key is to find out what really works for each individual. Initial tutoring sessions will consist of things such as doing a learning style assessment, finding out where the student is in the learning process, setting goals, and making an assignment calendar to make sure we meet all deadlines. Next, I’ll come up with a lesson plan that I feel will work best to get the student on the right track.

Being passionate about my new career as a graphic designer and photographer, I have dedicated myself to the pursuit of knowledge and continually improving my abilities. Stemming from this is a love of teaching. It gives me great satisfaction to take a student from a feeling of being overwhelmed to complete success.

The thing that really inspired me to start working as a tutor moving forward, was a recent experience where the roles were reversed and I was the student! It was my graduating semester for my most recent degree. I was taking a web coding class and for some reason, I just could not grasp certain concepts. The only thing that really helped was when a particular classmate explained something to me. So, I thought I would ask her to tutor me privately. I hired her, and within a few hours, everything just clicked! She had the most amazing sense of how to explain things in the particular way that I understood them. I hired her for two more 3 hour sessions and took my grade from almost failing to not only getting an A grade in the class, but really loving the coding process and wanting to learn more and more. I look forward to using that inspirational experience, my other teaching experiences, and creative passion to help students grasp materials that they are having trouble with.

For my most recent degree program, I took classes for general computer graphics and techniques, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop. I have created many projects in class and as a freelancer using this software on a Mac. Examples are books, posters, brochures, flyers, logos, packaging, business cards, and much more. Though I have worked on PCs in the past, I've been using Macs exclusively for the past 6 years, so I can also give general computer use lessons.

I have always been the artistic type and have taken many fine art classes growing up. Part of my most recent degree program involved digital and film photography classes, fine art classes such as drawing, watercolor and gouache painting, fundamentals of design, and art history. During that time, I worked as a product photographer for an online store. After graduation, I worked as a freelancer and took photographs of a property that I then used to design a brochure for a client.

Before going back to school, I worked extensively in the restaurant industry as a server, bartender, and trainer for 22 years, where I picked up many of my cooking skills. I learned all of the basics from my mother throughout my life, who worked in a family-owned restaurant growing up. She is an unbelievable cook and trained me very well at home. She also taught me more involved techniques like making cakes, breads, and pastries from scratch, making weekly meal plans for the family and putting together a shopping list, and preparing an entire Thanksgiving dinner for the family. For cooking lessons, I will evaluate what the student can already do, what the goals are, and come up with a personalized plan that takes into consideration any food preferences, aversions, or allergies. I will also keep the lessons interesting without being overwhelming.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I hold a Communication Design degree, which included in the coursework an introductory graphic techniques course that had an introductory section about InDesign, an advanced InDesign Class, a typography class where InDesign was the software we used extensively for all projects, and an advanced graphic production class where this same program was used to do all coursework. I have also watched countless educational videos and tutorials about it, and completed mock projects as practice. Lastly, I used this software to write an entire booklet of 78 pages for a final project. I am very comfortable using it. To keep my skills current, I am now writing an instructional manual for myself using all notes I've ever taken while in class or watching tutorials on my own, and I still watch educational videos as well.

Cooking

Cooking is something that has been taught to me since as far back as I can remember. My Mother's side of the family has owned the same family restaurant since 1957, where she worked growing up. She took that knowledge and what her own mother taught her and made it a point to make sure I knew how to cook well. Helping her prepare dinner was a regular thing for me and now it's just second nature for me. On top of that, I worked in the restaurant industry myself for 22 years, where I picked up an even wider variety of skills. Cooking is something I greatly enjoy and am very good at. Not everyone has the opportunities or resources that I did, so I would love to share what I know with others.

Graphic Design

I hold a degree in Communication Design, which consists of multi-media graphic design and fine arts. I am proficient in all of the current software professional graphic designers use, such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop. Graphic design projects I have created include things such as books, posters, brochures, flyers, logos, packaging, business cards, and newsletters. I have also freelanced as a graphic designer.

Macintosh

I hold a Communication Design degree in which we used Macintosh computers exclusively on a daily basis for the entire degree program. I have also used one professionally and personally on a regular basis for the past six years. I am very comfortable using both laptop and desktop Macs.

Photography

I have had a love for photography and an eye for composition since I was a child. I started untrained, amateur photography in elementary school with a film camera, then moved to digital later in life. During my latest degree program from 2014 to 2016, I took an introductory film and digital photography class where we had the opportunity to develop our own photos in the school darkroom. After that class, I took an advanced class focusing on Infrared Photography. During that time and after graduating, I worked taking product photography and real estate photography.
