I am a passionate and enthusiastic learner and teacher who is interested in encouraging and assisting the development of diverse students at various levels with numerous learning styles, strengths and weakensses. I am devoted to tailoring my instructional methods to meet the individual needs and interests of students while working with them to meet their short-term and long-term educational goals related to both skills development (reading, writing, speaking and critical thinking) and content acquisition. I believe in preparing students to be successful 21st century citizens by embracing and building upon their learning experiences that have taken place both inside and outside of the classroom. My teaching experience in the private school setting has taken place at The Lovett School in Atlanta, GA and at Culver Academies in Culver, IN. I have a Masters degree in English Education for grades 7-12, have experience tutoring, have taught AP courses, SAT and ACT test preparation, and have instructed interdisciplinary studies courses. I am excited to work with students who are looking to develop mastery and move into and excel in AP classes as well as those who are struggling to grasp concepts and need to develop skills that are needed in order to be successful in the coming school year.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While teaching I have had countless learners with IEPs and have worked closely with counselors and doctors in order to develop methods for tailoring my instruction to meet the specific needs of each student. I have my students take a strength assessment survey and complete a learning profile survey to see which teaching approaches will work best for their learning styles and also implement strategies that have worked in the past as well as experiment with strategies that might be useful given research in the field of methods for learners with ADD and ADHD in order to best accommodate each student. I think the best method for successfully teaching learners with ADD/ADHD is to get to know them personally, establish a safe working environment where they feel supported and have success, no matter how small, and evaluate their process together with open dialogue and specific expectations constructed together.
At Ohio State University my undergraduate major was English and I graduated with honors and a 3.7 grade point average. I went on to get my Masters degree in Secondary English Education and graduated with a 3.9 grade point average, and for the past four years I have taught English and American Studies in private schools. I have a passion for writing and literature, and I also have experience preparing students for standardized tests.
I am a certified 7-12 Integrated Language Arts/ English Instructor and scored in the top 10% of all test takers to-date on my Praxis I and Praxis II exams and as a result, was given an award of distinction. I sat for these exams 4 years ago, and in my time teaching since then, I have received a teaching award for my use of the methods and practices these exams assessed.
Public speaking is one of the core competencies in many schools and in the workplace, and it is an essential skill to master in order to participate in both the classroom and the "real world". In my experience teaching public speaking, both extemporaneous and prepared experiences are necessary and there are 9 essential components which are as follows: eye contact, inflection, poise, posture, volume, enunciation, tempo, fluency and gestures. Students will initially learn the importance of each of these skills through the use of modern examples (such as movie scenes, news clips and interviews) and then will learn strategies to assist them when delivering a speech or just voicing an idea or opinion so that their ideas are understood by their audience as they are intending them.
I have taught SAT prep as a part of my English course instruction to high school students (grades 9-12) at college preparatory schools for the past four years.
