About Amy

Hola amigos!

My name is Amy D. and I'm 35 years old. I have been a high school teacher in the upstate of South Carolina for the past 8 years. I absolutely love teaching, and I have found that it is very rewarding to inspire students to strive for the best and make their dreams and accomplishments a reality, no matter how challenging or arduous.

Growing up in a big family has had a profound impact on my passion in life - to teach. I took 4 years of Spanish in high school and found out that I not only enjoyed learning the Spanish language, but it was easy for me. Later on, I attended Clemson University and attained a Bachelor's degree in PRTM with a minor in Spanish. I then moved to Greenville and worked in the travel/hospitality industry for a few years. I came to realize that something was missing in my life and decided to go back to school to get my teaching certification.

My blood runs orange, so my only option was to go back to the best school I know and love, Clemson University, of course. I completed my student teaching at Liberty High School, and got my certification in 2008. During those last two years at Clemson, I served as a private Spanish tutor for two middle school homeschool students. After getting my teacher certification, I worked for three years as a Spanish teacher at Easley High School and four years at Boiling Springs High School and loved every minute of it. I am currently in my ninth year teaching Spanish at a High School.

As a teacher, I am blessed to have a weekends off and a summer break. In my spare time, I hope to use my talents, experience, and teaching strategies to tutor/teach children and adults in my time off. I am usually quite flexible when it comes to meeting dates, times and locations as well as using different methods of teaching, based on the preferences and learning styles of individual students.

Please feel free to send me an email and I would be glad to speak with you or answer any questions you may have for me.

Gracias,
Amy D.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently certified in Secondary Education and I have taught Spanish for 8 years. I was mentored for 2 years by the head of ESL/ESOL in our modern language department at the school i work at. I helped tutor her students after school and played a key role in creating lessons and units for the ESOL curriculum. Through my experiences with ESL/ESOL students, I gained numerous teaching strategies for making language learning easy and fun, but also extremely effective. Some of these include graphic organizers, pictures, vocabulary games, skits, story-telling, etc.
Also, I am constantly using circumlocution and rephrasing techniques in my Spanish classroom as one of my key teaching methods of language. Using just the target language as much as possible to model natural, everyday speech is very important. It gives the learner maximum exposure to various idioms, cultural sayings, sentence structures and other grammar concepts that are crucial to fully understanding the target language in depth.

Spanish

I have a minor in Spanish and obtained my Teacher Certification in Secondary Education from Clemson University. I have been teaching Spanish for eight years at the high school level. I also lead several educational student tours to Spanish-speaking countries each year.
