I recently completed my master's degree in psychology and along with my bachelor's degree in social science with an education specialization I can offer expertise in several subjects. While studying graduate level psychology courses, I gained knowledge in learning theory. As everyone does not learn the same, it is very important for a tutor to understand the learning style of the student in order to maximize the time spent together. The surroundings that the student are also important. Things that are often taken for granted such as lighting, seating, and noise level play an important role in the retention of information.
As a parent I learned the hard way about tutoring. My oldest child has an affective disorder (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), which hindered his learning as the disruptive behavior that often accompanies the disorder forced me to withdraw him from the traditional public school for two years. Along with a neighbor who was having similar issues and his younger brother we enrolled in the South Carolina Virtual Charter School for grades 7-9. My role was learning coach, but I delivered most of the lessons for the middle school grades, assisted with all assignments as needed, and monitored the assessment taking. The curriculum (K-12) is first-rate, and I challenge any adult to attain mastery in the English and writing subjects. What I did not know I certainly relearned, and part of my academic success in college and graduate school was directly related to my ability to write.
I have always been an excellent math student, especially algebra. While I do not have a formal degree in mathematics, I attended Georgia Tech and got took advanced mathematics classes as part of the engineering curriculum. I cannot explain how or why I retained algebra so well, but I have. My experience with the boys at home confirmed it though. I also excelled in research methods and graduate-level statistics. I successfully tutored two of my classmates through a very difficult graduate statistics class.
As a parent, I understand the need to think differently about learning, both for children and as an adult. I am a lifelong learner. I pledge to promote learning to you in your academic endeavors.
Thank you for your consideration.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a master's degree in psychology from the University of the Rockies (June, 2013). I spent a significant amount of research focusing on Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, specifically the etiology of the disorder and how it affects behavior. I have significant understanding about how to control the disorder and to provide an atmosphere where a student can attend to his or her studies.
I graduated with high honors from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in 1993 and have 30 years experience in the food and beverage industry. I currently serve on the advisory board of the G. Frank Harris Career Center for culinary arts. Additionally, I have given numerous cooking classes and demonstrations throughout the Greenwood community. I have a sound fundamental knowledge of hot and cold food cookery and am proficient in numerous international cuisines, including Northern Italian, French, and regional American.
I played trombone throughout high school and college. Additionally I am currently working with my son as he auditions for the United States Marines Band. I have played in community bands and have participated in one big band recording session. My strength is reading, as I play bass and trombone in a praise and worship band.
