About Madelyn

I graduated cum laude from Furman University in 2016. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English, a certification in Secondary Education, and a minor in Linguistics/ESOL. I am a current high school English teacher in the upstate.

I absolutely love tutoring because I have a passion for working one on one with students. I love getting to know a student, and I love catering my lessons to what they want and what they need. I think it's really important for students to have that one on one interaction that they may not get in school. At the end of the day, education is everything, and I want to help students achieve their fullest potential!

I specialize in reading strategies and literary analysis. I also have a huge passion and love for creative writing and grammar.

If you think I would be a good match to help you succeed with your education, please contact me! I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a current high school English teacher. I have had a passion for the subject for several years, and I believe confidence in English leads to success in all other areas.

Grammar

I have studied grammar for many years. I am also a current high school English teacher. One of my main focuses with my students is indirect grammar instruction as it applies to real life contexts.

Literature

I graduated from Furman with a Bachelor of Arts in English. While studying, my main concentration was in literature. I also teach high school English, which is literature focused. I teach my students how to take a text, analyze it for meaning and language, and then take what they have learned and apply it to projects or cross-text relationships.

Reading

I am currently a teacher of Read 180, which is a program designed to teach students reading strategies. We focus on strategies such as inferencing, cause and effect, and summarizing.

Writing

As a high school English teacher, I teach my students a wide variety of writing styles and techniques. I believe in working in a workshop environment where students feel safe to write at the level they are at. From there, I can work with them one on one to improve their own writing rather than taking a holistic approach.
