I started my teaching career in Philadelphia, as an instructor for both General Ed and Special Ed math classes. I spent four years teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. While I enjoyed teaching the upper levels of math, I developed a true passion for Algebra. When I relocated to Cleveland, OH two years ago, I made the transition to middle school, teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math, with the focus of my curriculum being Prealgebra skills. I also worked with the English/Language Arts teachers to guide and coach 8th grade students as they planned, wrote, and delivered speeches to the school community.
Coming from a non-math undergraduate background (I double majored in French and International Relations), I tend to find non-traditional methods of approaching math problems. When working with a student, I like to present them with a variety of methods they can use to solve a problem. Then, I work with them to determine which method or methods make the most sense to them. I pride myself on being able to break larger concepts down into straight-forward, smaller steps. I love witnessing those "light bulb moments" when a student's face lights up with the recognition that they have mastered a skill.
Even though I taught Math, I have always had an affinity for writing, grammar, and public speaking. In the past, I have worked with students to prepare and deliver speeches. I have also helped students work through the writing process for both creative writing and research-based/informative writing.
During my time as a Special Education teacher, I managed a caseload of students in addition to my teaching responsibilities. I wrote IEPs, developed/advised on instructional techniques to meet the needs of my students, monitored progress towards individual goals, and met regularly with parents, teachers, and students to maintain open lines of communication.
I am generally available for tutoring sessions on weekdays from 11am - 6pm. I am also willing to work with students on the evenings and weekends, depending upon my family's schedule.
