About Katherine

Hello, and thank you for visiting! My name is Katie and I have 4 years of experience tutoring students in English, Reading, and SAT, and ACT test preparation.

I graduated with a BA in English and am soon traveling abroad to teach English as a Foreign Language. Having taken teacher certification course work as well as the GRE, I am confident in my abilities to help students in whatever areas pertaining to English or Language Arts that they might require. This can include anything from simple proofreading and public speaking, to organizational skills and learning conversational English. As an English major, I had the opportunity to read, write, and give oral presentations on a daily basis, so I am confident that I can help almost any student gain confidence in these areas.

My best experience tutoring occurred while I was a Resident Assistant at Eastern Illinois University. As a Junior in college, I was tasked with helping a community of 58 college women learn to live together in the residence halls while also maintaining their GPAs. Many of my residents worked part-time outside of class; others were full time athletes on demanding academic scholarships. After the fall semester, my community had the highest average GPA on campus compared to the eight other residence halls at the university. Our community went from an overall 2.1/4.0 GPA to a 3.6/4.0 GPA. I credit this mainly to my residents' diligence, but also to my many personalized study plans and academic programs that motivated everyone to study hard.

If you think I could be of any help to you or a student you know, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!

I was an English major and have taken multiple teacher certification courses in this subject. I also spent much of my time in college tutoring students in English, as well as working through the University Office of Housing and Dining as an Academic Liaison (an appointed position, given out once a year to only eight Resident Assistants on campus). This position allowed me to gather significant data on student study habits, and then work with professors on developing study tips for students.

Much of what I encountered during my work as a Resident Assistant and Academic Liaison has prepared me for the real-world job market. After graduating from college, I moved to a new state, and found a job within two days of moving. I credit this to my confidence in interviewing, my well-written resume, and my overall professional appearance and demeanor. I gained my speaking and writing skills from my study of English, as well as my highly competitive job as a Resident Assistant. In my daily life in college, I learned to dress and speak professionally both in work and in the classroom. This has proven to work, as I not only found a great job right after college, but was also accepted in a program abroad to teach English as a Foreign Language.

If you are a student looking to gain more confidence in your reading and writing skills, better your study habits, and learn to prepare yourself for life after high school or college, then please consider contacting me. I can help you gain the skills necessary to be successful in the categories listed in this profile, as I have already helped myself and other students in these areas. Thank you again for your interest, I'm looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am completing a Master's in TESOL.
