Hello Math Students,

If you or your kids need help with math for the standardized admissions tests like the GRE, GMAT, and SAT, or math, statistics or economics courses, or school admissions tests, Regents and state exams, I can help you understand what you need to.

What these tests, and math in general, do is test your thinking process--your ability to think and reason logically. So you have to understand what you're doing and why, and if you do you can apply that to any problem on the test. I'll work with you to make sure the math clicks with you, and keep helping you with it until it does. In my experience people who've had trouble with math often have had teachers who weren't good at explaining how to do math, or went too fast; we'll go through problems step-by-step to make sure you understand each step and why you're doing it.

Of course, like anything, you can't improve without time and practice--the homework and repetition of what we're learning is indispensable for you to assimilate what you're learning well enough to do it confidently on the test. And once the problems start to click, they actually become fun. Like puzzles. Really.

I have a B.A. from Tufts University in economics and got an 800 on the SAT math section and several diagnostic tests for the GRE and GMAT that I've taken for the test-prep classes I taught. I've taught privately for several years, and before that taught test-prep classes at Baruch college for Cambridge Educational Services, in addition to tutoring students in algebra and geometry at Harlem Village Academy, one of the top charter schools in the city.

Thanks a lot for your interest, and look forward to speaking with you about your math studies, and hopefully working toward your higher score and better understanding of math soon.

-Ben

GMAT,

GMAT

I tutor math for the GMAT, and I really enjoy doing the questions on the test, and explaining to students the logic of the questions and how to think them through. The questions are really just little puzzles, and can become fun once you understand how to do them (well, maybe not quite fun for everyone, but at least more fun :)) Both the problem solving and data sufficiency question types are skills that can be learned; with someone to show you the reasoning process involved, and how to recognize the step by step process to solve them, anyone can greatly improve their ability to answer the questions, and of course, their score on the exam. You'll need to practice similar problems for homework between lessons, to assimilate and reinforce what you're learning. And with an understanding of the reasoning process involved, and practice to hone your problem solving skills, your scores will improve. Please let me know if you're interested in GMAT math tutoring, and I'd be happy to speak with you about it and map out a plan of study. Thanks a lot for reading, and look forward to speaking with you, and hopefully to working on some GMAT math together :)

I really enjoy helping students to understand the logic of algebra, and to recognize that it is a system in which each term has a distinct meaning and function; the key to doing well all in algebra, as in all math subjects, is to understand what all of the terms mean, and how you can work with information you're given in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for. Algebra is all about logical thinking, and you should always understand WHY you're doing each step--you shouldn't be forced to rely on memorization alone, but should have a good command of the reasoning you're doing. When you have that, you'll be able to think through any questions that you're given, even challenging ones, because you'll be able to recognize and think through the steps you can take to solve the question. Math does take practice, because without enough repetition you won't be able to remember everything we're learning in lessons; but with sufficient practice, anyone can greatly improve their ability to do math, and reach a higher level of proficiency than they originally thought. I've been tutoring privately for five years and I've never had a student who wasn't able to improve greatly, with clear and intuitive explanations to help them understand the reasoning process, and practice between lessons to reinforce and assimilate what we're learning. Thanks a lot for reading my little description of algebra, and please let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss tutoring further; I'd be happy to speak with you and tell you more about my approach. Look forward to speaking with you, and hopefully to working on some math together!

Geometry,

Geometry

I enjoy helping students understand the logic of geometry, and recognize that it is a system in which each shape, angle, line or term has a distinct meaning and function; the key to doing well in geometry, as with all math subjects, is to understand what all of the parts mean, and how you can work with information you're given in a step-by-step reasoning process to determine the answer you're asked for. Geometry is all about logical thinking, and you should always understand WHY you're doing each step--you shouldn't be forced to rely on memorization alone, but should have a good command of the reasoning you're doing. When you have that, you'll be able to think through any question or proof that you're given, even challenging ones, because you'll be able to recognize and think through the steps you can take to solve it. SAT Math,

SAT Math

I tutor math for the SAT, and I really enjoy doing the questions on the test, and explaining to students the logic of the questions and how to think them through. The questions are really just little puzzles, and can become fun once you understand how to do them (well, maybe not quite fun for everyone, but at least more fun :)) With someone to show them the reasoning process involved in answering the questions, and how to recognize the step by step process to solve them, anyone can greatly improve their ability to answer them, and of course, their score on the exam. Students need to practice of course, to assimilate and reinforce what they're learning; and with practice their scores will improve. Please let me know if you're interested in SAT math tutoring for your child, and I'd be happy to speak with you about it and map out a plan of study. Thanks a lot, and look forward to speaking with you, and hopefully to working on some SAT math together :)
