Furman University (Spanish)
I graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree from Furman University in 2007 with a major in Spanish and a concentration in English as a Second Language. While at Furman, I participated in two study abroad programs, studying grammar, literature, and art history at La Universidad de Antonio Nebrija in Madrid, Spain and also studying history and literature at the Universidad Mayor in Santiago, Chile. Following graduation, I was selected to spend a year teaching English in Mexico at the Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.
I also served as the Bilingual Partnership Specialist for the state of South Carolina for the 2010 Census and was responsible for community outreach among the Hispanic community. I planned and implemented my own radio show in Spanish that aired twice a week via RadioLuz 1240AM and did weekly interviews on Super Impacto 103.9 FM.
In the 2010-2011 school year, I taught Spanish 1 at a charter high school in Greenville, S.C. I taught 6 classes of Spanish 1 and had about 120 students total, while also privately tutoring students in both Spanish 1 and 3.
For the past 5 years, I have worked with Greenville Literacy Association as a Senior Program Manager where I have written ESL curriculum, taught ESL classes to adults for levels 0 through 6, as well as pronunciation, reading, and writing classes. I have also worked with many ESL students one-on-one and enjoy designing lessons appropriate for their level and goals. Additionally, in 2014, I completed a TESOL (Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate with English for Life Academy and acquired even more expertise in teaching ESL and writing communicative language lesson plans.
As a non-native Spanish speaker, I feel that I actually have the advantage when it comes to tutoring someone in Spanish because I had to learn the language myself. I know the struggles that are involved and am able to explain the grammar and rules in a way that a native Spanish speaker can't. I have been studying Spanish for over 12 years and have lived in a Spanish-speaking country, having had to adapt to the culture and rely only on my Spanish-speaking ability. I love the Spanish language and am very adept in explaining the grammar and aiding students in mastering the language themselves.
I look forward to working with you. Please feel free to message me with any questions and/or to check my availability. Ashley is a natural teacher. She not only has absolute command of the language but also has the ability to make a point in many different ways to reach the student. She is very patient and willing to try different methods to help a student reach his/her goal. Importantly as well, she is also very nice. I look forward to working with her in the future.
Ashley is very helpful with useful/practical aspects of learning Spanish. Her extensive experience with travel and immersion in other cultures has served her, and thus her students very well. Also being a non-native speaker gives her great insight and anticipation to the challenges and struggles the student may experience. These many attributes, combined with an easy-going disposition and good sense of humor make her an excellent choice of tutor for the aspiring Spanish speaker of any level.
I can now see for myself significant progress in my Spanish, after these 3 months or so with Ashley. It is indeed hard work, but the results are worth it. I would not be anywhere near this far without the help of Ashley. Having worked with her has inspired me and actually raised my goal to fluency, at least somewhere near her ability. It is quite a long way off, but now I can see it within my grasp, thanks to her. She is at a very busy and exciting time in her life and still finds time to help her students. Her interest and dedication is very much appreciated.
We were very pleased with Ashley and her approach to working with our daughter. We look forward to her continued lessons. Our daughter was very pleased and felt very comfortable working with Ashley. We continue to be pleased with Ashley and the progress she is making with my wife and son.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
