Northwestern University, Evanston, IL (Chemical Engineering)
I have a degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago. I have 6 years of classroom teaching experience and 7 years of tutoring experience. My specialties are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, preCalc, and Calculus.
I have recently relocated to the Greenville area. I had a successful tutoring business here from 2010 to 2012. I have tutored students from Mauldin and Hillcrest High, Greenville Tech, Clemson and Lander Universities.
Often when a new student comes to me, they are overwhelmed and discouraged by the subject matter. With one on one tutoring I am able to taper the lessons to their learning style, which usually results in rapid progress. I find it very rewarding to watch my students discouragement turn into confidence as they master their subjects.
Personally, I have three children who were all Honors and AP students in high school. All three were given academic scholarships to college, and my youngest has a full tuition academic scholarship at Clemson University. My children have all kept their scholarships by maintaining their grades throughout their college careers. I firmly believe that setting high expectations leads to success.
My classroom experience was at Mauldin High School, Mt Zion Christian School, and Centrepointe Christian School. I have tutored in Greenville County, SC as well as Rochester, NY and Lakeland, Florida.
I have tutored students from 3rd grade through college level, and worked with students from local community colleges and universities as well as local high schools and middle schools. I also tutor home schooled students and students taking online classes. If you would like references from any of many current or past students I would be happy to provide them for you. Contact me and I can help get you or your student on the road to success! I have a degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago. Kay is one of the nicest and most helpful tutors I've ever had. Making you do problems you aren't comfortable with and poking you for questions. She helped me excel in Trigonometry, a class I never thought I would be able to pass. If you can get Kay as a tutor, you're very lucky as she cares wholeheartedly.
Kay teaches in a way that is very easy to understand and is extremely helpful! She makes learning something that is very difficult fun to learn with helpful tips and tricks. After only one session, my daughter said her confidence in geometry has gone up significantly! We are so grateful to have found her!
My son has met with Kay a few times and his confidence is much stronger. After his first meeting with her, he made 102 on his pre cal quiz. Kay is very kind and patient and great about making herself available based on your schedule. Kay gets an A+!
Kay was great with my daughter . It was her first lesson and once i told Kay what our goals were she was able to immediately suggest a couple of teaching strategies to help attain those goals. My daughter loved working with her
Ms. Kay helps me to prepare for quizzes and tests by going over practice problems with me. She is patient when I try to figure out the answer and is there for guidance and support. I definitely feel better prepared for class after tutoring with Ms. Kay than before tutoring with her.
Kay reviewed Chemistry with my daughter and was very helpful. My daughter has a test this coming friday, and now my daughter is very confident in her skills. Kay broke things down into ways my daughter could understand very easily.
Knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. The student has unfailingly succeeded and gained more and more knowledge of what he needs to do to succeed on his own. Wonderful tutor!
My daughter is very satisfied with the tutoring lessons she has received from Mrs. Kay. She is now comfortable in her class and making progress.
I am beyond happy with my tutoring lessons with Kay H. She is very patient and really makes an effort to make sure I understand the material. I feel much more confident with Chemistry now than I have before. You will not go wrong with her, she is the best in the business. Thank you for all your help!!
Kay was very professional and informative. My daughter enjoyed her first session with Kay and is looking forward to working with her on a permanent basis! She deserves a five star rating!
Kay is very professional and an excellent tutor. My high school son struggles with math skills and Kay helped him to pass his Algebra 1 Class as well as the Algebra 1 EOC exam that is a graduation requirement. My husband and I are very pleased at the progress our son has made with Kay. She is always prepared and very willing to work around our schedule. I highly recommend her as a math tutor for anyone!!!
She provided tutor to my daughter and it was last minute, during the last few weeks of school. Kay worked with my daughter and prepared her for finals. Wish we would have found Kay earlier in the year.
Kay was exactly what we were looking for. Our son needed to boost his ACT scores by 2 points to get to South Carolina scholarship levels. She knew just how to approach studying for the test and just how to get him motivated to obtain exactly the scores he needed. We were very pleased and have recommended her to many of our friends.
I had the pleasure of having Kay tutor me. I am an over 45 year old lady that is going back to school and was so in shock by College Algebra. Kay helped me and walked me through the steps and made me feel proud to work problems out in class with the students that were much younger. This was a opportunity from heaven.
Kay is a great tutor! She is patient and very helpful in breaking things down into easier ways to remember. I would recommend her to everyone!
She is always on time and accommodating. I was somewhat skeptical about finding a tutor "on line". Without a doubt she has made a positive impact on my son's math skills. I would highly recommend Kay to anyone that requires her skill set. She has been a great "find" for us.
My daughter felt very comfortable working with Kay. She was patient and kind while she worked through the exercises. My daughter doesn't normally relax with people when she first meets them but with Kay, it seems like a good fit. I look forward to seeing my daughter's grades improve as she continues working with Kay's support.
Kay and I are working on a plan to help my daughter improve her grades. She is not just focused on homework of the day. She is helping with some of the basic foundational areas as well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
ACT English is a subject in which study and preparation can greatly improve scores. I have found that much of the material tested is not taught in high school English classes, so students who do not study are at a distinct disadvantage. My best students have achieved scores of 33 and 34 on the ACT English test. Students who tutor at least 8 to 10 hours, start tutoring a month or more before the exam, and complete "homework" I give them between tutoring sessions see the best results, typically 2 to 4 points or more improvement. I am ready to help your student achieve their target score in ACT English!
ACT math is a fun subject to tutor! In my opinion, the ACT is a straightforward test of math skill. The SAT, however, tests both skill and critical thinking, so often a strong math student has more difficulty excelling on the SAT. My best ACT students have obtained 34's and 35's in math on the ACT. Students who achieve the best results start tutoring a month or more before the test, tutor at least 6 to 8 hours, and complete "homework" I give them to do between tutoring sessions.
ACT Reading tests a student's ability to read quickly and with excellent comprehension. I work with my students on tactics to improve both speed and comprehension. I also encourage my students to improve their vocabulary. My best students have achieved scores of 34 or 35 in ACT Reading. Students who begin studying a month or more before the exam, tutor at least 8 to 10 hours, and complete "homework" I give them between tutoring sessions obtain the best results.
ACT Science is a difficult subject area for many students. A couple of key ideas and a little practice can vastly improve test scores in ACT Science. My best students have achieved scores between 30 and 32 in the Science section. A typical student sees a 2 to 4 point or more improvement. Whatever your target score in ACT Science is, I can help you get it!
I have had many special needs student success stories both in the classroom and in my years of tutoring. I was hired by the Rochester City School District to be a full time tutor for an autistic first grader in a mainstream Spanish classroom. When I taught at Mauldin High, a full third (over 50 students per day) of my classroom students were Resource with specialized IEP's. Often these students hold an extra special place in my heart. I often find ADD or ADHD students are smart, capable, and willing to work hard to achieve success. These students often just learn a little differently than the "norm" and have difficulty concentrating in a classroom environment. One on one tutoring with a tutor who is willing to adjust to a student's learning style can make all the difference!
One ADHD student of mine was failing 5 of his 6 classes when he started tutoring with me three hours a week. He ended up with an A in Science and B's or C' s in all other subjects. Another Honors ADHD student was failing Chemistry and Geometry when he started tutoring with me and ended up with A's in both classes. Recently an ADHD Algebra student who was failing started with me mid semester, passed the EOC, and got a C in the class.
Algebra is one of my favorite subjects to teach, and I have had tons of Algebra students from middle school to middle aged over the years. Often the biggest problem is that the student is overwhelmed by the material and just does not believe he or she can conquer it. I love to hear them say, "That's it? That is so easy." Recently my new student with a 58 in Algebra got a 95, the high score in his class, on the next test. His parents were very surprised and very pleased.
Another freshman who had failed algebra was scheduled to retake it her sophomore year. Instead, she took an online course, tutored with me over the summer, got a 90 on the EOC and an A in the class. She moved on to Geometry. Once a student finds success in Algebra, they often enjoy higher levels of math and even pursue careers involving math or technology.
I have extensively tutored Algebra 2 students in both high school and college with excellent results.
I have had several ASVAB students who have improved their scores on the test. Usually students need the most help in math, which is good, because that is the area in which I am best equipped to help. One student failed the test twice before coming to me, and I helped him study and pass it the third time. He is in the Reserves. Another student wanted a high math score to obtain a better starting position. He tutored with me for two months and acheived his target score, telling me I was "the best teacher he had ever had." He is now in active duty and soon will be pursuing a college degree.
During the last school year I tutored three public school students in Biology for the entire year and homeschooled two other students in Biology. I thoroughly enjoy teaching Biology, whether we are learning cell structure and function, genetics, or looking at things under a microscope. Often Biology is a student's first introduction to higher level science, and my passion and love for the sciences can be contagious. Whether your student needs a little extra help on the side, some help reviewing for the EOC, or a full course of Biology please call on me.
Calculus is the ultimate in fun math. For many students it will be their last math class. Students at this level have a strong foundation and good study skills and are just looking for a little extra help. I recently had a Florida Southern student take the whole course condensed into 4 weeks in the summer! He had not taken a math class in two years. He tutored with me for the entire course and we moved from finding limits to the chain rule and integrals in just a few weeks. He got an A in the class. I have also recently tutored Polk State students in Calculus.
As a chemical engineer, Chemistry is a class I love teaching. I usually have 5 or 6 high school students and 5 or 6 college students each year. I am currently working with a premed student from University of Michigan and a summer student from St Pete College. I have also tutored Chemistry students from Lander University, Clemson University, USC Upstate, Greenville Tech and Tech Charter High School, Florida Southern, and George Jenkins High. Whether you are stuck on stoichiometry, the ideal gas law, molarity, molality, or balancing equations I can help.
While living in Morocco, I have had the opportunity to teach English to both children and adults. Most of my students did not know one word of English when we began lessons, they speak either French or Arabic. I have found it immensely rewarding to see how quickly my students have learned English, even without any words in common.
I really love tutoring for the GED because getting a high school diploma or GED is such a huge stepping stone to success in a person's life. The biggest problem I have with my GED students is they do not show up for tutoring sessions. Once a student "no shows" me three times, I will not continue as their tutor no matter how much I want them to succeed. For you GED students out there who are serious and willing to put in some work and effort I am all about helping you!
I have tutored Geometry off and on for both public and private school students over the last ten years. I am currently teaching geometry to a student online. I look forward to helping you or your student master geometry!
I have tutored extensively for the math section of the GRE. I know the format of the test and the types of questions a student needs to be prepared to answer. If you are going back to school and need a refresher before taking the GRE, I am interested in working with you.
As a student I took a full year of Organic Chemistry for my degree in Chemical Engineering (I loved the class!). I also used my Organic Chemistry knowledge in the workplace at Dow Chemical and Solvay Polymer Corporation. I enjoy tutoring Organic Chemistry because it is a very difficult class for many students and tutors who can help are often difficult for students to find. In the last year I have tutored Organic Chemistry students from Florida Southern, USC Upstate, Clemson University, and Greenville Tech. I find some professors focus a lot on spectroscopy and others more on reactions and mechanisms, but it's all organic chemistry and it's all fun for the student willing to put in the time and effort required!
Physical Science is a combination of two of my most favorite subjects, Chemistry and Physics. I taught Physical Science in the classroom at Mauldin High, so it is an especially fun subject for me to teach. Many students coming out of middle school are not ready for the additional intensity of high school sciences and find themselves failing. Call me if you are having trouble with
Physical Science, I have all the worksheets and I can help get you back on track.
Physics is a fascinating subject to teach and learn. It is around us all of the time and no human can get through a day without physics. I often find myself driving further or working later with my Physics students because I enjoy the subject so much. I try to pick up Physics students whenever and wherever I can. I recently tutored Electricity and Magnetism to a Polk State student. She had a lot of anxiety about the class, could not do the homework sets, and had failed the first exam. She was so distraught she was not getting any sleep. I met with her 2 hours a week for the remainder of the semester. She got an A in the class. Please contact me for high school or college level Physics (either calculus or algebra based). I am looking forward to working with you!
Prealgebra is an important stepping stone to Algebra and the higher maths. If a student is struggling in Prealgebra it could mean they are missing some fundamental math skills and might consider weekly tutoring through out the semester.
I have had several Precalc students in the past year, all with good results. Many students at this level just call me when they get into trouble, which is often when they get to series and sequences, logarithms, trig identities, or graphing polynomials with asymptotes. I am available whenever you or your student needs help in precalculus!
Reading is a subject that can open a lot of doors of opportunity for a student. I love to read, and I encourage all of my students to read for pleasure. Reading helps a student become stronger in every subject. I have taught many youngsters to read using both phonics and whole language methods. I have also taught adult literacy. I would be happy to tutor your reading student at any level.
SAT math is a subject in which study and preparation can result in big improvements in test scores. My last SAT student went up 80 points in math after just 4 lessons with me. Students who start preparation a month or more before the exam and who complete the "homework" I give them between tutoring sessions see the best results. I recommend 8 to 10 hours of tutoring, I cannot really guarantee an improvement in scores with one or two sessions. I love tutoring for the SAT, it is very rewarding for me to see my students accepted to their first choice colleges, and many also receive scholarships based on their test scores.
SAT Reading is a subject in which preparation can lead to higher test scores. The best way to improve reading and comprehension is to read. Many students, however, struggle with the ability to discipline their minds to focus on the task, so I address this issue and try to help my students improve their concentration. Students who tutor at least 8 to 10 hours, start tutoring a month or more before the exam, and complete "homework" between tutoring sessions achieve the best results. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring for the SAT; it is very rewarding for me to see my students accepted to their first choice colleges! Many of my students also receive scholarships based on their test scores.
SAT Writiing is a subject in which studying and preparing can result in big improvements in test scores. I find that much of the material tested is not taught in high school English classes, so students who have not studied rely on intuition or instinct rather than knowledge. Unfortunately, much of spoken English ( and a good bit of written) is grammatically incorrect so these students are at a disadvantage. Students who tutor at least 8 to 10 hours, begin a month or more before the exam, and complete "homework" between tutoring sessions achieve the best results. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring for the SAT. It is very rewarding for me to see my students get accepted to their first choice colleges, and many of my students also obtain scholarships based on their test scores.
Lately I have been tutoring an awful lot of students in trigonometry. I had one junior college student who failed this class and dropped it twice before tutoring with me. He now has an A in the class. Another student had a 45 in the class when he started tutoring with me, and made an A on the next quiz and test. These are the results I aim for with all of my trig students.
