I am a member of this service, because I like helping students learn. To me, there is something special about seeing the look on students' faces when they grasp a concept you are trying to teach them. I think this is part of my calling.
I worked as a substitute teacher in Jefferson Parish earlier this year. I worked in the after-school writing program at Henry W. Grady High School in Atlanta, Ga. in 2010. The special thing about those two jobs is that they gave me a chance to interact with and help students. It was the joy of helping a freshman in high school learn how to write essays. It was the fun of playing games with and mentoring fourth graders.
I get the chance to help these students learn skills that will help them later in life, and I like that.
I am a long-time New Orleans-area award-winning journalist as well. I have worked at the New Orleans Times-Picayune. I have written for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WhereY'At magazine, the Baton Rouge Advocate, the Chicago Sun Times and the St. Petersburg Times. I also am a Creative Writing teacher.
My writing experience makes me a valuable asset to students who are writing essays to get into colleges. My experience as a sports television and radio critic allows me to help students with their public speaking and communications skills.
I know that with my communications and marketing background and teaching skills I can help a variety of students with whatever needs they face. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
