I am a former Foreign Service Officer and senior business executive who took up teaching after early retirement. I have both an English and social studies credential in South Carolina and California. I have spent several years overseas as a student, a government officer, and business executive.

I speak Japanese and Vietnamese.

I was a full time teacher in middle school where I taught reading and English. The students in my reading classes increased their reading grade level by 1.7 grades in one semester. This remarkable progress was validated by the MAP test given by the district.

Every student has his/her own challenges when it comes to reading. This is especially true with the kids I've worked with who have IEP's and 504 plans. What is even more important than a teacher and a tutor is the parent. Without strong involvement in solving the child's learning issues, I have found that progress is much, much more difficult to achieve.

I received a Presidential Citation for Academic Excellency when I received my credential and I scored in the top 15% of all persons taking the social studies Praxis exam.

I have tutored both ESL and native English speakers in both reading, writing and speaking. I am available on SKYPE for consultation and assistance with homework.

I was recently gratified when a 19 year old young man who I tutored in English, geography, history, and test-taking passed his GED on his first attempt. I have also helped a lot of students who were aiming to pass the ASVAB.

But, my specialty is reading fluency called "automaticity" and comprehension. Of course, reading comprehension is the key to success in most other courses. If you are interested in my qualifications, please contact me and set up a free appointment where I sit down with parent and student during which time I can assess the student's needs.

Business

Business,

Business

I was a marketing executive and management executive for over twenty-five years. For about thirteen years, I was the vice president of supply and distribution for a 30mb/d. oil refiner. My main job after that was that of senior marketing V.P. and corporate manager for a large international commercial real estate firm (Nomura Real Estate, U.S.A.) In between those two jobs, I started and owned two different business: a direct mail company and a real estate sales company.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

My familiarity with PowerPoint is borne from my experience as a business executive and as an English teacher. As a marketing executive for a large international firm, I often used PowerPoint (both in Japanese and English) to illustrate and illuminate the subject at hand. In business of course, all the "cute bells and whistles" of PowerPoint are passe in presenting what we called "dog and pony shows". On the other hand, as an English teacher, I have found that those very "bells and whistles"...animations, sound effects, movie clips, etc., are all important tools that I can employ to engage the young mind. I have used PowerPoint for over ten years now and find it an essential instrument in my "teaching toolbox".

Japanese

I studied Japanese for two years at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan and worked for a Japanese firm for thirteen years. I am fit to teach elementary Japanese only since, over the years, my mastery of kanji has diminished. "Use it or lose" it is a cruel reality. I see myself being able to teach first year university students the basic grammar, pronounciation, and writing techniques. I would also be effective in assisting Japanese speakers to speak, read, and write English by being able to assist them in learning by being able to explain English nuances to them in their own language.

History

European History,

European History

I have a BA in history and have taught history in middle schools. I am well versed in European history from Ancient Greece to modern history. Areas of interest include English and French history. I also have background in Asian, particularly Japanese history. I scored in the upper 5% on the Praxis exam without any preparation!
Music History,

Music History

I am a consumer of music, not a producer. Nevertheless, I understand the fundamental underpinnings and science of it. More importantly, I understand music's place in Western history (and to some extent, Eastern history). There is a reason why Western music "sounds" the way it does; music reflects the tastes of those who support musicians and pay for their music. Indeed music, like the other arts closely reflect the direction of political, social, and religious currents within society. The history of music therefore, must be an integral part of the teaching of general history.
