I am a small business owner, investor and professional business liaison to multiple international companies and organizations, where my skills in Mandarin Chinese, Shanghainese, and English help bridge the gap for my clients between China and the United States. I primarily provide simultaneous interpretation and written translation services to Chinese corporations with whom I've shared a long-term relationship.
Between 2014 and 2015, I offered my services as a Chinese language instructor at the Corning Chinese School in Corning, NY. This experience at a brick and mortar institution of learning provided me with a strong foundation for teaching outside of the realm of the corporate arena. My students were primarily grammar school age where the traditional approach to teaching a language was ineffective. Younger students have a rather short attention span and are less likely to remain focused on learning the technical aspects of a language. In lieu of the exclusive use of textbooks and blackboard illustrations, I adopted a style of employing classroom competition. Younger children tend to learn more quickly, and even without the direct knowledge that they are doing so, when the rewards are what they view as more important to them such as being on the winning team or earning a ribbon or small toy for their accomplishments.
On the volunteer side, I have also cooperated with Corning Incorporated, the Corning Museum of Glass and the Corning Gaffer District in sponsoring technical art exhibits focused on alternative expressions using the medium of glass. Well known artists involved in those exhibitions included Yuki Otani from Tokyo, Japan and Justin Ginsberg, an associate professor at the University of Texas in Arlington. Although my skills in Japanese are elementary as compared to those in Mandarin Chinese and Shanghainese, the goal of communication in doing that was to provide a comfortable atmosphere with the initial customary pleasantries and subsequent basic interpretation between people of varied cultures. My personality is very friendly and outgoing which lends itself to dealing quite well with people.
