About Leah

I am a board certified cytotechnologist (someone who looks at cells under a microscope to check for cancer and other diseases) and molecular biologist (someone who looks at genetic coding to find cancer and other diseases). This means that I have an expert understanding of human anatomy and physiology down to the cellular level. While this may sound intimidating, I'm not! I am an easygoing fun loving person as well as a patient and understanding tutor. I do my best to make learning an enjoyable experience. My favorite thing about tutoring is seeing the flash of understanding cross a student's face when something they thought was impossible suddenly becomes simple.

Teachers today do not have the time or resources to provide the kind of individually designed plan for your child that can be essential to learning, this is why tutoring is so valuable. Simply going over material at a student's individual pace, making sure a concept is fully understood before moving on to the next can make a world of difference. After all, science builds on itself. Without a strong foundation in the basics, more advanced concepts become nearly impossible. For example; if a student has a poor understanding of what makes up the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) bases, the chances that they will be able to grasp the more complicated processes of DNA transcription and translation are slim. In today's fast-paced world all it takes is one missed or poorly understood lesson for a student to fall hopelessly behind. Let me help bridge that gap and make learning fun again.

The biological sciences can be challenging material. On top of that many processes are named for the scientist who discovered them rather than given a logical name that could help students and other scientists remember what that process is! Frustrating right? I do my best to help students find ways to relate material to real life situations and use mnemonic devices to make it easier to recall information. Unfortunately their are some things that simply must be learned through rote memorization and for those things we say "Flashcards, Flashcards, Flashcards!"

Feel free to contact me for more information on how I can be a valuable asset to your family.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I have a professional certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology in Molecular Biology which qualifies me to preform genetic testing in a clinical setting. This requires an in depth understanding of the basic dogma of genetics; DNA is transcribed into RNA which is then translated into a protein, resulting in the expression of a gene. I'm also knowledgeable in genetic diseases and abnormalities.
