About John

Retired educator and administrator. I taught at high school, community college, university and private industry settings over 42 years. I am certified as a high school teacher in comprehensive science by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I received my science education at Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY receiving BS and MS degrees in Geology (Master's Thesis topic was Fission Track Geochronology). I attended West Chester University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Delaware, and Eastern Kentucky University for education and business courses. I have taught for many years in the field of emergency medical services, preparing paramedics to work in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and South Carolina. I began teaching earth science, physics and chemistry at Oxford Area High School, Oxford, PA.

Currently, I am tutoring an algebra student from Powdersville, and a fourth grader from Crosswell Elementary. (2014-2015)

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught introductory algebra and general mathematics in high school. Many students are confused by the presentation of the algebraic concepts. I will make these concepts understandable.

Astronomy

General planetary and stellar astronomy are great personal interests. I can present these in unique understanding for students.

Elementary Math

I have successfully taught mathematics in high school, and to several tutorees. Currently, I have a geometry student from Pickens HS and an astronomy student from Clemson.

General Computer

I have years of experience programming and operating computers. From the age of punch cards, batch processing and programming in Fortran and Basic languages to the modern interactive software I have used computers in all of my professional employment. I am familiar with both Windows and Linux based systems.

I have taught basic computer usage for several years in the emergency medical service where I was the training officer. I taught computer usage and medical reporting to all new employees as part of their new employee orientation. I did this for 15 years prior to my retirement in 2011.

Geology

Geology is a fantastic area of study, all things in the planetary system are based in geology. Understanding the interrelationship of the sciences will assist the student to master geology.

Microsoft Access

Database operations are some of the most difficult for students to master. Using practical exercises showing these operations will allow the student to master the use of databases. I am certified as a high school teacher in comprehensive science by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Microsoft Excel

Spreadsheet operations are necessary for almost all business activities. Hands-on exercises using the operations are the best way to learn how to use and manipulate spreadsheets.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Designing and producing interesting and eye catching presentations are necessary to master PowerPoint operations. Practical exercises will assist the student to learn these operations.

Microsoft Word

The practical use of word processing operations are necessary skills for all persons in the current business environment. Practical exercises using the operations of word processing will assist the student to master the subject.

Physical Science

A basic understanding of the principles of physical science will aid the student to understand many processes that are being used in the current world of business. Practical exercises showing these principles will assist the student to master them.

Prealgebra

A basic understanding of mathematical principles will aid the student to understand many other subjects. Using practical exercises to show these principles will allow the student to master them.
