About Kevin

I am a 20-year educator, all in elementary and junior high schools, from Illinois. I recently moved to Conway to take over a family business, and now that the business is established, I am ready to work with kids again! Although I've never taught in South Carolina, I am interested in using my skills, talents, and expertise to help kids in elementary and junior high become better students by any means necessary!

I am a fun-loving kind of guy that just loves working with kids and families. I enjoy having fun and making the time we spend together fun while getting work done! I can tutor pretty much any subject, and am interested in going beyond just school work...I can tutor sports! I am a 20+ year coach for baseball, basketball, and other sports.

I have 10 years' experience as an elementary teacher and taught Math subjects in each of those 10 years, as well as being a Principal of an elementary school allowed me to keep up with Math and the new skills in Math.

I have 10 years' experience as an elementary teacher and taught Reading and English subjects in each of those 10 years, as well as being a Principal of an elementary school allowed me to keep up with Reading and English as well as any new skills or areas of interest kids need to learn in order to pass standardized tests or local assessments.

I spent 10 years as an elementary teacher in Central Illinois. I spent 8 years as an elementary/junior high principal in Illinois as well.

I own a business so my scheduled is VERY flexible! I hope you consider at least meeting me so that I can show you my skills and qualifications are perfect for you! Whether you are 5 or 14 years old, I can work with anyone and work on any subject! I am a very flexible guy that can work around your schedule during the week or even weekends! Sports help? Sure! I am willing to do whatever!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As a Principal for eight years, I worked closely with families and especially students who were diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in my schools. I spent time in professional development classes learning about how to work with students diagnosed, and I have close friends that I've worked with their kids who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

Baseball

I was a baseball coach for recreation and junior high baseball for 24 years, including taking several teams to playoffs and world series games.

Basketball

I coached both recreation and travel basketball for 10 years while I was a teacher in Central Illinois. I've also coached basketball for a junior high school in grades 5-7.

Common Core

As a Principal, this was one of our main subject areas for professional development. I've continued to keep up on Common Core and how schools are using it, as well as how families are using it. I am familiar with it's purpose and how kids need to use it to be successful in school, especially during testing time!

Cooking

I spent some time as a camp counselor during my early teaching years, and one of the areas I taught kids was cooking. I also spent time as a boy scout learning to cook and teaching this as a merit badge.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent 10 years as an elementary teacher in Central Illinois. I taught all subjects, including Art, PE and Music, and spent another 8 years as an elementary Principal for two school districts, both having K-5 elementary schools with special needs classes. I also volunteered tutoring students, mine or other kids, in subject areas that were primarily elementary but some junior high.

Handwriting

Handwriting was one of the subjects I taught during my teaching career, teaching 3rd and 4th grades.

Microsoft Windows

I spent time as a Principal teaching our Fifth Graders how to use a computer and one of the areas I taught was Microsoft Windows and how to use the programs.

Phonics

As a Third Grade teacher, Phonics was one of the main subjects I taught during my time as teacher. As a Principal, I helped put together a program for phonics instruction in K-3 grades that allowed students to continue learning how to read and use words before they can read to learn.

Social Studies

I taught social studies during my 10 years as an elementary/junior high teacher and my minor in undergraduate college was social sciences.

Softball

I coached baseball and softball over a period of 24 years. I was an assistant coach for softball teams in a recreation league for 3 years.

Study Skills

As a school teacher and administrator, I spent a lot of time working with students, parents, and teachers on how they can improve study skills to make it easier for students to study outside of school. I spent time as a teacher and principal putting together programs before and after school for kids to have to work on homework or tutoring, which included learning new study skills.
