Coastal Carolina University (Political Science)
I am an honors student at Coastal Carolina University, and I am the Student Body President for the 2015/ 2016 school year. I have been tutoring at CCU for two years in the Political Science department and I am a tutor on staff with the athletics program. I also have two semesters of experience working with 4-6 graders teaching global citizenship in Montessori school. I am very passionate about helping students learn about the world around them, and I take great pride in watching students grow towards interacting with the world in a wholesome educated manner.
I became a tutor at Coastal because I want to see my classmates succeed, and I love seeing students attain that success. I pride myself in my ability to easily communicate with students from a variety of backgrounds. Additionally, I excel at making connections from school material into the popular culture of my students, using analogies of the material to anything from a game of football to horseback riding, even cheerleading and video gaming.
I grew up surrounded by books, and my mother was an English professor for 20 years. From an early age I have been around English literature and enjoy the English language. Additionally, my professors hold my writing ability and command of the English language in high esteem. My tutoring with the athletics department is primarily in this regard. I aid students in the critical reading comprehension, and composition.
I am a double major in political science and philosophy, both of which involve significant historical considerations. I love taking historical events, contexts, and ideas and translating them into modern circumstances so that students from any background can understand the motivations and influences that caused them. I believe a solid foundation in history is key to success because the past can either teach through success or failure, and the successes can be studied and emulated while the failures can be studied and avoided.
I invite any student to contact me if they need help grasping a concept, learning something totally new, or even if they need simple refreshers to remain sharp. I am flexible with my availability and am adaptable to many different learning styles! I look forward to hearing from you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
