I love helping children develop a true love of learning! Helping children become confident readers, writers, and mathematicians brings me joy. It is particularly rewarding to be able to work one-on-one with students because I can cater to their individual needs and see progress more quickly.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Furman University and a Master of Arts (plus 30) in Teaching from University of South Carolina. I obtained a SC Teacher's Certification in Special Education (K-12th) and Early Childhood Education. I taught for 5 years in an elementary self-contained Special Education classroom, 9 years in Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms, and 4 years in a 1st grade classroom. I also tutored students throughout my college years and my career as a teacher in a variety of one-on-one settings. I have worked with a variety of students, including nonverbal severely mentally disabled children and adults, children with autism, typically developing children, and gifted elementary-aged students.

I tutor students in elementary or middle school math (through pre-algebra). I LOVE math and my excitement often rubs off on my students. :-) I teach math using a variety of teaching methods, depending on what is most successful for each individual student. I have found that some students learn best with visual cues, others with auditory cues, some with music, others with movement or tactile cues. in addition to traditional paper and pencil math work, we play games to introduce or reinforce math concepts. I have had many children come to me with a strong dislike or fear of math and, after only a few sessions, plead with their parents to let them come do math with me.

I tutor elementary and middle school students in reading and writing. It is important that students have a strong understanding of the phonics code and can apply it when decoding new words. I love working with beginning readers and helping them gain their confidence as a reader. However, I have found that many upper elementary and middle school students do not have this foundation and can greatly benefit from direct phonics instruction to improve their fluency and reading comprehension. I teach each student with a truly individualized plan and incorporate a variety of hands-on materials in each session.

Communication with parents is key. Following each session, I provide parents with a report of what we worked on, what successes the student made, and tips on how they can reinforce the learning at home.
When working with a new student, I typically request any previous assessments, report cards, and/or information from teachers to give me an idea of the student's strengths and weaknesses. On the first session with the student, I informally assess the student to get baseline data and gain insight on the child's learning style and academic needs. Then I develop an individualized plan for teaching the child and modify it as needed throughout the tutoring sessions.

Please let me know if I can help your child with his/her tutoring needs!
