About Destiny

I’m Destiny, and I am a recent college graduate. I specialize in literature, grammar, composition, social studies, college prep, and development of study skills.
I first began tutoring in high school as part of a school program designed to help student athletes with their homework. As a summa cum laude graduate, I continued to develop study skills and habits that allowed me to thrive under such a rigorous course load. I shared these skills with my peers by assisting them with coursework, helping them create and maintain structure for studying, and editing their papers.
Upon graduation, I spent a year at a local high school as a college adviser. As a college adviser, I assisted students with preparing for college admissions exams (SAT and ACT); editing and revising college admissions essays; and developing study skills suited for the rigor of college. Outside of my role as a college adviser, I tutored a college student in English language composition.
My approach to tutoring and college prep is both product-oriented and process-oriented. I help students identify specific goals (i.e. improving grades or scoring well on a test) and help them construct a plan that is conducive to the achievement of those goals. At the same time, I want my students to be invested in what they are learning and why it is important. Thus, my sessions involve discussions about the texts we read to hone their critical thinking skills and facilitate self-discovery. For this reason, I prefer one-on-one tutoring for in-person engagement. Finally, I want students to develop increased confidence in and sense of independence in their capacity to learn, so it is important to me that my sessions equip students with necessary study skills and structure that they carry with them and build upon beyond our sessions.
I am a new Wyzant tutor and look forward to helping you achieve your goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have always loved vocabulary and grammar mechanics, which allowed me to score well on the ACT English portion when I was in high school. As a college adviser, I was required to keep up with the format and structure of college admissions tests. Thus, in addition to helping students build a basic foundation of vocabulary and grammar knowledge, I am able to equip them with the test-taking strategies that will help them succeed on the ACT English section.

Study Skills

Having graduated summa cum laude, I know what it takes to study efficiently and effectively. I help students identify tangible goals (i.e. improving grades or test scores) and help them develop the means to develop the structure and time management strategies that fit their needs. At the same time, I ask questions and promote discussion that invites critical thinking so that students are not only absorbing information but are also synthesizing it with other information. Finally, I provide both support and encouragement for what can be an overwhelming and frustrating process.
