About Tracy

My love of teaching stems from a passion for helping ignite a love of learning, especially reading and writing, within students and helping facilitate a greater understanding. As a Language Arts teacher for the past six years, I have worked with diverse students - from English language learners to students in special education to gifted individuals...and everyone in between. My experience with such diverse populations has given me the tools to differentiate my instruction to best meet individual needs.

My goal for each tutoring session is to ascertain where a student is in his/her current skills, to use a variety of teaching strategies to challenge students' learning, and to assess progress. Because every student is different, every lesson must be unique to meet the needs of an individual.

I specialize in tutoring all the aspects of English Language Arts - literature, writing, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and language conventions - thanks to a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in literacy, combined with six years of teaching and many years of tutoring experience. I am certified to teach Language Arts at a secondary level in New Mexico, Alabama, and South Carolina.

I am available after school (starting about 4 pm), evenings, and weekends for tutoring sessions, and I am willing to travel in the Columbia area. I am also available for online sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you soon to help you start making strides towards greater success in your education!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My primary qualification for teaching English is that I have been an English teacher for the past six years and am certified to teach this subject in three states. My certifications were earned through my education, experience, and passage of praxis tests in my content area. In my six years of teaching, I have taught literature, writing, reading comprehension, and language conventions of the English language to advanced and gifted students, students with special needs, English language learners, and every type of student in between.

Literature

I am certified to teach English Language Arts at a secondary level in three states: New Mexico, Alabama, and South Carolina. In addition to my six years of teaching at this level, I have completed conferences and training on specifically preparing students for AP literature and language. In my years of teaching, I have been given both advanced and pre-AP English courses to instruct. In my undergraduate coursework, I took many upper division English literature courses both at Colorado State University and the University of Wales in Swansea.

Proofreading

I completed a Bachelor's in Technical Journalism with a focus on technical writing and specialized communications. I have worked for several magazines and newsletters writing feature articles and editing copy in APA style. I completed a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization in Language, Literacy, and Culture from New Mexico State University with a 4.0, through which I became fluent in AP style. In addition, I am certified and highly qualified in teaching Language Arts at a secondary level in three states: New Mexico, Alabama, and South Carolina. My years of teaching English have also made me proficient in MLA style.
