About Wendy

I have a degree in Education from Converse College. I am a certified teacher, and I am certified to teach special education and elementary education. Immediately after college I began teaching in public schools in Columbia, SC and have continued for the last four years.

I have extensive experience in teaching letter sounds, letter blends, and sight words. I have taken course work in literature for the child and using high interest reading material to practice basic reading skills, learn vocabulary, and teach comprehension skills.

I sincerely enjoy working with students to learn new skills in a fun and interactive environment. I look forward to meeting with you and finding out how we can best meet your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

During the last four years I have worked with students on pre- writing skills such as copy a circle, square, etc. to fulfill requirements for the Brigance Assessment and skills that are needed to advance to letter development. I have worked with students on letter writing skills using the handwriting without tears program. I am currently working with students on writing cursive to sign name.

Praxis

I am a certified special education teacher in South Carolina. To receive this certification I had to take the principles of learning and teaching (PLT), special education: core knowledge and application, special education: teaching students with behavioral disorders/ emotional disturbances, teaching students with intellectual disabilities, and elementary education to add highly qualified status. I have experience in tutoring college students and professionals in preparation for the praxis exams. I work with them on developing a study schedule, develop a study plan to address all test materials in given time frame, teach test taking procedure and strategies. A few strategies I have taught include testing time management, review and analysis of directions, relying on first impression, narrowing down multiple choice answers and answering extended response systematically.
