About Kevin

I enjoy teaching! I've worked as a youth mentor and educator in South Carolina for nearly four years and am proud of the positive impact I've had on people's lives. I've worked extensively with preteens, teens, and senior citizens. I particularly pride myself on helping others develop the critical thinking skills needed to be a great student and a good citizen. I'm polite, professional, kind, and well humored with individuals I work with.

I enjoy learning! I've made it a life goal to continue learning about anything and everything. I recently completed college degree #3 and haven't ruled out going for another (if resources allow). I love to apply my passion for learning and college experiences towards helping others improve and expand thier skill sets or make it to (and make it through) college.

I love being creative! Two of my three degrees are focused on design and media production. I've also worked in various media production roles, including running my own small graphic design business for a few years. I have extensive training in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, InDesign, etc.) and other professional media production software, have experience and training in the use of professional media production equipment (DSLRs, light kits, audio recorders, Mac and PC workstations, etc.), and have written extensively in a variety of media for both enjoyment as well as professionally. I also enjoy producing and performing music (I've made more than enough for an album!)

I love working with computers! I've built over 1,000 computers and helped maintain and troubleshoot systems across multiple college campuses. I've been a microcomputer technician, a network administrator, and still occasionally work as a consultant. I specialize in building high end media production and / or machines that operate at extremely low acoustic levels. I enjoy teaching people (especially seniors) how to better use, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and enjoy computers and modern electronic devices. I also am happy to help people learn how to use operating systems (Windows, MacOS, Linux), productivity software (like Microsoft Office), better utilize web browsers and the Internet, etc.

If you're interested in learning more about any of the areas I'm passionate about, or simply need help studying or getting past tricky homework problems, please feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I've worked as an advertising production assistant for a 22,000+ circulation newspaper in which I regularly laid and out and prepared the daily paper for print using InDesign. I also have an AAS in digital media design and a BA in Media Arts that regularly included the use of and/or training in InDesign. I've used the program on and off for over a decade now.

Film

I've taught documentary film production through the Helen Hill Media Education Center in Columbia, SC for the last school year. Our students completed multiple short films showing various aspects of their lives and/or communities. I also have an AAS in Digital Media Design as well as a BA in Media Art, both which included the production of various films and animation. I've made over 7 short films and have helped students create over a dozen films and have submitted to a few film festivals, though I've not had my work screened at any yet.

General Music

Since an early age, I learned to read music notation in school and church and would continue to read, perform, and even write music. I've sung in a variety of choirs, played the French Horn for over seven years, can play the piano (albeit poorly), and am able to at least play a scale or two on single reed and most brass instruments. I have a strong understanding of meters, keys, scales, as well as some general music history and music theory coursework. I began writing my first symphony in 6th grade (including transposing for various instruments), I've produced an album of original mixes and compositions (though I never released said album) as well as some pieces for television advertisements, and have previously had my work featured by the original creators of Sony ACID Pro as an example of what can be made using their software.

Graphic Design

Between exceptional art teachers in grade school, constantly winning art shows, an AAS in Digital Media Design from Texas State Technical College, an AA in Art from Midlands Technical College, and a BA in Media Art from the University of South Carolina, I have extensive training in graphic design.
I've also ran a small online business for four years doing graphic design (mostly consisting of logos, signage, and 2d texture illustrations for 3d objects). I still periodically do freelance graphic design (mostly logos) for non-profits, small businesses, and individuals.

Photography

I have an Associate of Applied Science in Digital Media Design from Texas State Technical College and a Bachelor of Art in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina. Both degrees extensively covered photography concepts such as how best to apply F-stop, depth of field, ISO settings, etc. to a photographic composition, as well as use of common tools such as DSLRs, lighting kits, different lenses, and the like.
My photography has been featured in newspapers, professional blogs, as well as for various freelance work. I own and periodically use Pentax DSLRs and various fixed and telephoto lenses for freelance, volunteer, and personal photography. I've also received training on Canon and Nikon DSLRs.

Study Skills

I have successfully completed three college degrees, graduating with over a 3.65 institutional GPA in my recent undergraduate degree, and over a 3.75 institutional GPA (and with honors) from the associate degree before it. I usually worked a part time job while attending school, which required me to develop strong study skills, time management, and personal discipline.

Video Production

I have an Associate of Applied Science in Digital Media Design from Texas State Technical College and a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina. Both degrees included extensive use of video equipment, including multiple courses on composition, lighting, editing, and audio production. I've been trained in camera operation as well as a number of software programs (such as Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Avid, etc.) I've produced numerous short films, have managed nearly a dozen individuals in a multimedia campaign for a non-profit organization, and have taught both media literacy and video production concepts for the last year through the Helen Hill Media Education Center at the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, SC.
