About Malai

As a South Carolina certified teacher for the past seven years, I truly love teaching children of all ages. Currently, I serve as the Math Interventionist for children in grades 3-5 at a public elementary school. I am known for my nurturing and loving, yet firm teaching style.

I have a Master's degree in Elementary Education and an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction from Cambridge College. I have a passion for researching how children learn and methods of instruction that can best help them stay engaged while using higher order thinking skills.

I have taught in a variety of environments including Montessori and Project-Based Learning. I have taught students in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. I have also taught high school students through the Upward Bound program at a local college. I believe all children can learn. As an educator, it is my duty to find out each child's individual learning style to best meet their needs. I look forward to working with your child and your family to help him/her become the best learner.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a South-Carolina-certified elementary teacher. My certification began in 2009 and expires in 2016. This is my sixth year of teaching. I have taught grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 in all subject areas.

Elementary Math

I have taught Elementary Math for the past eight years spanning from grades 1-6. Currently, I serve as a Math Interventionist in a local elementary school. In math, I enjoy using manipulatives with my students to move them from the concrete to the abstract.

Handwriting

I am Elementary certified teacher and have taught students in grades 1-4. For three years, I taught Lower Elementary Montessori (Grades 1-3). While in this environment, handwriting was taught with very focused and specific instruction. My students were taught letter formation, size, and spacing. I choose to focus on one area at a time to allow the child time to grasp the skill. Posture and paper position were also key elements in teaching students handwriting.

Phonics

I have taught as a certified Elementary teacher for seven years. I have taught students in grades 1-3 in a Lower Elementary Montessori environment. In my classroom students were taught phonics skills. Also, I served as a tutor and Director of Education at Sylvan Learning. I have assessed students phonics skills (consonant blends, long and short vowel sounds, cvc words, decode words, sight words, etc). As an instructor, I like to assess the child's ability level first then begin instruction of phonics using manipulatives, books focused on specific letters or words, sight word flashcards.

Praxis

As a certified teacher with more than seven years of experience, I am very familiar with the Praxis test and the preparation needed to be successful. I am qualified to help candidates prepare for the Elementary and Early Childhood exams because those are my areas of certification. As a Wyzant Tutor with more than 50 hours, I have helped students prepare for the SAT and ASVAB. I have also worked for a local tutoring company specializing in helping students prepare for exams. Through online and paper preparation materials, my specialty is helping students get organized, develop a timeline for studying, and how to prepare for the day of the test.

Public Speaking

As a Journalism and Mass Communications undergraduate student, public speaking is certainly in my realm of expertise. I have also worked in the field of Public Relations with The American Red Cross. Last school year, using the TED-Ed Club model, I taught students how to develop an idea they are passionate about and present it to an audience.

SAT Reading

My degrees in Journalism and Education set a strong foundation in my ability to prepare students for national tests. I have served as Director of Education with a national test prep company where I prepared students for the SAT/ACT tests. I have also worked with students individually helping them prepare for the SAT Reading Test.

Writing

Ed.S. In Curriculum and Instruction
M.Ed. On Education
B.A. In Journalism

Malai has the gift of being a teacher! — I learned great critical thinking and reading skills. She explained every question to me after I answered it, whether I was right or wrong, lol. She also notified me of my strengths and weaknesses. God bless Malai P. and may the Lord always be with you! ...
