I love helping you succeed! I specialize in public speaking, foreign accent reduction, English as a Second Language, Spanish, and English grammar, writing, and reading. I also have fun tutoring algebra, and Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel. As a former college professor and dean, I can get you ready for college entrance tests and the writing and math skills you will need to do well in college. I have also been a corporate trainer and can help you prepare for your career from entry level interviewing skills through presentation skills to leadership training.
Can I also teach children? You bet! I taught both my children to read using a great phonics method. I use motion, rhythm, and songs to help with memorization, and beat the clock games to help get math homework done. I coached my kids through their elementary and high school years successfully, and my daughter even called home for suggestions on research sources for her college essays: "Mom, I need an introduction for my essay. Do you know a philosopher who has a theory about....?"

Diana worked with my 8th grader for the last few months of the school year. She was patient in dealing with him and over time she has worked with him to improve his writing and reading skills. We have not only seem a dramatic improvement in his grades but also in his self confidence. He now takes pride in his work and is motivated to do even better. Her quiet but firm mannerism makes it easy for anyone to work with her. She is dependable and is interested in the overall success of her student. She has done an excellent job!
Diana was a great help to my daughter. She was always accommodating with her tutoring times and was a constant source of positive reinforcement that lead my daughter to be more independent as her knowledge grew. Nice lady!
Diana is an excellent tutor. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to improve their public speaking skills. She is very professional.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Learning English is fun. Really! Whether it's English as a Second Language, English grammar, writing college essays, or producing a research paper, I can give expert help. I have taught college English and technical writing, am certified as a corporate trainer and training designer, and hold a national certification to be a foreign accent reduction specialist.
I take a very practical approach to grammar and writing; I first cover only the elements you NEED to know to write or speak correctly. I have developed a step-by-step method that you can master quickly. I have lots of practice exercises already developed, and we can use what you have already written at work or in school as exercises too.
Let's get started!
I have fun learning about languages and cultures and tutoring others in American English and its pronunciation. I am certified by a national company in accent reduction and have a Master's degree in linguistics. I use the Side by Side curriculum for ESL because it allows for lots of speaking practice. I use the Compton method for accent reduction because it works! Let's get started now to help you speak more naturally and express yourself well in English!
Long vowels, short vowels, and lots in between. All kinds of consonants combining to make strange sounds. English reading and pronunciation can be very tricky! Why does "stuff" rhyme with "enough" but not with "through"?
It's all a matter of patterns. If we can group words and notice the patterns they follow, we can make good guesses until we figure out what the words are. I believe in building on patterns in teaching reading by phonics. That leads to early success and allows for the pattern-breaker word to be an intriguing entry into a new pattern.
Language is fun, and I like to pass on my enthusiasm to everyone who studies with me.
Although my degrees are in languages and linguistics, I have always loved math and was the designated tutor for classmates who needed help from the fifth grade on. In high school,I often helped my classmates with their math homework.
When I became a college adjunct professor, besides teaching English, I taught developmental algebra to students who had not been able to pass the math entrance exam. I found it very rewarding and the students claimed that my patient explanations helped them understand equations for the very first time. I also helped my own two children with their math classes in high school.
I developed a one-formula method for teaching students to solve story problems when they complained that there were too many formulas to memorize.
I have taught public speaking/presentation skills for colleges and corporations, and even to the engineers in a local city professional development program. I have a Master's degree in Linguistics and have taught many types of communications courses at the college level for 25 years. I have also been a participating member of Toastmasters for 5 years.
Writing is sometimes a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. A step-by-step approach can make it much easier to get thoughts recorded so others will understand, agree, and even enjoy reading them.
To engage the reader and make a point clearly, writing must have a logical structure. While there are many effective structures, some are best used for persuasion, others for narration, and still others for explanation. The author's purpose and characteristics of the audience inform these choices.
Once an appropriate structure is chosen, the author's style, including vocabulary, must fit the audience's expectations. Will the readers be young or old, college-educated or not, knowledgeable about the subject matter or desiring to learn about it, for or against a position?
Finally, grammar must be perfect to establish the credibility of the writer. Who would believe someone who hasn't learned the difference between 'their' and 'there' and 'they're' which is usually taught in third grade? Even the smartest person will look foolish if the reader identifies grammar and spelling mistakes.
Learn the easy process and see how words can flow masterfully!
Spanish is best learned, I believe, in the context of interesting real-world dialogues. If you first use what you are learning in specific, repeatable conversations, you can then adapt what you know to new situations. I'll use listening exercises, substitution drills, and readings to help make your learning flexible early on.
After you master a few vocabulary and grammar structures, I'll ask you to compose dialogues of your own in writing, and we'll practice them out loud as soon as they are checked for correctness. I will teach pronunciation from day one. (There's no sense in "unlearning" bad habits.)
If you are in school, I tailor lessons to follow your particular school's curriculum so that your success in class is more likely.
Let's get started toward success in Spanish!
I am a Compton certified foreign accent reduction coach. I have taught public speaking, presentation skills and accent reduction as well as English as a Second Language for over 25 years. I am also a member of Toastmasters. I enjoyed phonetics - the production of speech sounds - most in my courses for my Master of Arts in Linguistics degree, and really like to have fun with language patterns and delivery.
I believe swimming is the best exercise in the world. My dad, a swim coach and author of several books on swimming used to have this sign on his office window: "Swimming - You'll never find a better sport to save your life!"
I began swimming when I was two years old and worked up through the ranks of the Red Cross classes to earn my Water Safety Instructor's certificate when I was in college. I began helping my dad teach swimming to children when I was just 10 years old. In junior high school, I joined a synchronized swimming team and performed in shows from then through college. I even competed once in a New York State competition doing a synchronized routine I had choreographed to the song "Alley Cat." I coached my high school team members in synchro and choreographed many routines for them.
If you haven't started learning to swim yet, now is the time. Swimming is easy and fun. I will help you get past your fears and help you relax.
