College of Charleston (Elementary Education)
Hello! My name is Carmen M. I recently graduated from the College of Charleston in May 2016 with a BS in Elementary Education. I am employed as a fifth grade teacher with the Berkeley County School District. I LOVE my job! I teach all of the "general" education subjects: math, science, social studies, and ELA. I am well-versed in each of these subjects, especially surrounding the new South Carolina state curriculum.
Although fifth grade is where I am now, I have worked with numerous age groups, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. I am qualified to work with children who struggle in reading, especially early on in their educational journey. I believe that ALL children are smart cookies! Everyone has different abilities and talents, and that is one of my favorite things about the profession. Everyone is capable of achieving and getting to the "ah-ha!" moment. It just takes support and determination!
I like to utilize technology as well as hands-on materials to help kids strengthen their math skills. I believe that when children are able to "touch" the math and experience it for themselves, it becomes more realistic, making it "click" faster.
I have studied and taught the "Words Their Way" word study curriculum as well as done intensive work with students who fall below their grade reading level.
I have learned to love science and social studies! There are so many resources out there that make learning and retaining scientific/historical information a breeze. I would love to find the materials that adhere best to your child's needs.
Regardless of a child's age or strengths, I have a firm belief that each and every child is capable of learning. Sometimes it just requires a different perspective and an extra push! My favorite part about teaching is making learning fun for kids again. It doesn't have to be all books and worksheets! Thank you so much for taking the time to read over my profile. I look forward to meeting you! Happy learning! Hello! My name is Carmen M. I recently graduated from the College of Charleston in May 2016 with a BS in Elementary Education. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
