About Amanda

Tutoring is my passion. I've worked as a tutor for three years, and I have received official tutoring certifications from the College Reading & Learning Association. It is my goal and personal joy to break down the material in a way so that the student has a new understanding that they may not have had before.

I specialize in algebra 1 and 2, calculus, French, and economics courses, all of which I've studied at my university. I have maintained a 4.0 in my studies. I have tutored both on the college level and the high school level in these courses. I structure my tutoring sessions to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses the student has in the material. During the sessions, I encourage the student to come up with the answers through series of questions, which improves the student's learning experience versus my teaching the material directly. In my experience, this method highly empowers students and enables them to handle both coursework and exams on their own. I strive to be as flexible with my time as possible.

I do not consider myself a teacher, but a helper, so I expect the student to be willing to put in the legwork when it comes to reading the textbook and attempting the homework outside of sessions. This way, the session is dedicated to material that the student doesn't actually understand. I am not a substitute for completing assignments.
I hold myself to a high standard, so if there is any way for my improving and/or restructuring sessions, I openly accept criticism in the interest of the student. I strive to adapt to the learning style of the student. If you are not learning, I hope for open communication about these issues.

I look forward to working with you and empowering you to achieve success in your studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I use algebra significantly in my study of economics, so I have a fresh memory of the math. I have tutored algebra I for 5 years. Mathematics was one of my minors, and I have aced courses of higher levels than algebra I.

Algebra 2

While I was attending college and studying mathematics and economics, the algebra that I have used in those subjects has predominately been derived from this course. I have tutored Algebra II for 4 years as well. I have excelled in courses at higher levels than this course, so I have confidence that I am able to tutor it.

Calculus

Calculus is one of my favorite courses to tutor. I graduated from Charleston Southern University having studied Calculus I, II, and II. I have tutored fellow students in this class before, being one of the top students in the class.

Economics

Economics was my major, and it was the most common subject I tutored while at the Learning Center at Charleston Southern. I have tutored over 100 hours in economics alone. I have a set method of tutoring in this subject as I allow the students to rationalize through the answers as the bulk of economic questions deal with incentives, so I use the students' incentives to tutor them.

Elementary Math

I have experience tutoring young students in middle school with the abilities to break down material on their level. I have worked with students as young as three years old as a teaching assistant in an art camp. I have the ability to engage children in their subjects of study.

French

I have studied French for six years, from high school to college. I have minored in French at my university, and I have excelled in all the upper level classes that have been offered. I maintain my understanding of the language by consistently reading French literature.

Precalculus

I am educated in precalculus and calculus, and received college credit for the equivalent of a precalculus course through my high school education. I have tutored the course at my university. I use material from precalculus in both calculus and economics consistently to stay refreshed on the material.

Amazing Amanda — Amanda was hired to help my daughter with Algebra II. My daughter said she made learning comfortable and fun. She looks forward to meeting with Amanda next week and so on. She came into our home and focused on what our daughter needed and they worked it out. What they did in one hour would usually have our daughter frustrated for hours even though she pretty much knew the material. I feel the time ...
