About Jeffrey

I am a recent graduate from Union University who has worked as a substitute teacher for the past five years in order to support myself through grad school. I now have two masters degrees, one from Union University in Intercultural Studies, and a second degree in Divinity from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. My education and experience has made me proficient in teaching the humanities (English, History, Geography, Sociology, etc.) and, having grown up in Switzerland, I am also comfortable tutoring both French and German.

I find that my students do best when they are motivated to learn. I begin each tutoring relationship by setting goals with my students and then charting a path on the calendar to help them achieve their goals. This way, my students know what they will be focusing on during each session before they even arrive so that no time is wasted.

My greatest success story as a tutor was taking a 9th grade student from speaking no French to being able to test into French 3 and within six months. I believe that anything worth achieving requires diligence and focus, and I expect my students to continue to work towards their goals in between tutoring sessions.

I see my role as a tutor as someone who can take a large goal (such as a high SAT score) and then break it down into manageable weekly chunks. I help the students track their progress and let them know when they are falling behind by spending a portion of time each session looking over the work they have done that week, reviewing corrected tests and planning for any large projects or tests on the horizon.

The majority of each session will be spent developing solid study habits and helping the students to recognize and use their resources to find the answers they need with the overarching goal that they will eventually be able to teach themselves and succeed without my help. The last portion of each session will be spent assigning homework for the students to do before their next session. This extra practice ensures that my students do not forget the skills we went over in the tutoring session, and helps them prepare for future tests.

Overall, I am passionate about teaching and I believe in every student's ability to achieve.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I recently graduated from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary with a Masters in Divinity and a concentration in Church Planting. I have taught several Sunday School classes in my church and am an avid student of the Scriptures. I have also taught a 12 week course on the kingdom of God.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught English to refugees in the San Francisco Bay Area for over two years. I have also taught English in public schools as a substitute teacher as well as at Universities in both Thailand and Western China.

Sociology

I recently graduated from Union University with an MA in Intercultural Studies. My coursework included studies in linguistics, social networks, international organizations, ethnographic research, and intercultural communications. I also completed two qualitative research projects on the cultures of Bhutan and Serbia respectively.

TOEFL

I spent two years teaching English to refugees in the San Francisco Bay Area in collaboration with the IRC (International Rescue Committee).
