About Martha

Dear perspective students and parents,

I have worked with students on a one-to-one and small group basis for over thirty years, helping students become competent, capable learners on multiple levels. Students and/or their parents have sought me out for help, methods, and advice to improve student learning. Throughout my teaching career, this has been the case, and now I am interested in helping students as a tutor.

I have extensive experience teaching all ages and abilities of high school students. I have been voted Teacher of the Year by my peers twice in my career and maintain a professional, knowledgeable, and respectful attitude at all times. I can help students decode words and terms, use a variety of study methods, get more from their reading, improve their writing, and improve their research skills for most history, social studies, or psychology courses.

I work with the student, getting to know him or her, so that I can help him or her capitalize on strengths while improving weaknesses. Eventually, the students come to recognize their best learning styles under my tutelage and guidance. Through the development of student confidence and skills, I help students become competent, effective learners who can achieve their educational goals. While history, social studies, and psychology are my areas of interest and expertise, many of the skills and technique the students learn from me may translate to any area of study.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I taught American History throughout my professional teaching career. I helped tutor students who needed additional ways to learn the necessary information to become successful with American History. I also stay informed about the standards expected of students of American History and assure that my students understand these.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is based on understanding the rules of numbers and variables. Once these rules are in place, most students begin to thrive in math. My goal is to help students gain confidence and proficiency in their math understanding and skills.

English

I have been trained in English Language Arts Common Core standards, and I have worked extensively with English teachers as we co-taught English and History as an interdisciplinary opportunity. I have worked with literacy programs throughout my career, including, but not limited to, the National Writing Project. I have had training in MLA and APA writing styles as well.

Geography

I have taught a variety of social studies courses throughout my teaching career, including Geography. Because of my varied background, especially in Global Studies and World History, I have a good understanding of the basic principles of Geography. I help students understand the interconnectedness of Geography.

Government & Politics

I have taught and tutored students in Government and Politics. I help students understand the difference between facts and opinions as related to these subjects. I also help students apply the information of Government and Politics through the use of terms and vocabulary.

Grammar

I was paired with an English teacher for six years to teach an interdisciplinary course. As a result, I became very familiar with the literacy expectations of grammar, reading, and writing. I have also had Common Core training in English Language Arts. I have worked with literacy programs throughout my career.

Reading

I became very familiar with the literacy expectations of grammar, reading, and writing. I have also had Common Core training in English Language Arts. I have worked with literacy programs throughout my career. Reading across the curriculum has been particularly useful in helping students develop their reading and literacy skills.

Social Studies

My undergraduate degree is in Secondary Education: Psychology6, from the University of South Carolina. My Masters Degree is in History and Social Studies.

World History

I have taught World History and Advanced Placement World History. I have a thorough knowledge of what is necessary to become successful in World History, and I know how to help students gain this knowledge base. I help students develop a global perspective of history through this course.

Writing

I have had Common Core training in English Language Arts. I have worked with literacy programs throughout my career. I have participated in the Midlands Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, and I have used many of the techniques I learned through this experience with my students.
