About Molly

Certified math and computer science teacher in Charleston, SC. Over 8 years of professional tutoring experience, including ACT, SAT, GRE, AP Calculus, AP Computer Science, and all levels of math, including college calculus and beyond.

I absolutely love to teach and to help students and parents who are overwhelmed to feel empowered and in control of their students' education.

I strive to meet students' needs in both long-term and short-term ways with tutoring. I understand the very practical needs students have to complete homework, prepare for tests, and earn good grades, and I enjoy working with students toward those goals. I also work to help students understand the concepts behind the questions, learn to think critically, and even discover their strengths and learning styles. That way, as they move on from a particular class or test, they are better prepared to take on the next steps in their educational process.

My Subjects:

Test Prep (SAT / ACT / SAT II / GRE) -- I have helped dozens of students improve their scores significantly on these tests. I tutor all elements of each test in a comprehensive manner and provide students with clear strategies and techniques they can use on test day to achieve great results. (I am also available to help with particular sections of each test).

Math -- I tutor all levels of math, from middle school up through advanced college courses including Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Statistics, and Calculus (including the AP classes). I have a great deal of experience tutoring math from 6th graders through advanced college courses and I adore working with these students to build a strong mathematical foundation that will benefit for years to come!

Computer Science -- I teach and am certified for AP Computer Science A. This course can be difficult to get a foothold in for many students, and I love to help students build their CS problem solving skills and technical knowledge so they can have great success! I also tutor other computer science courses including those in Java, C++, Python, etc.

Hebrew and Greek (Ancient) -- I took two years of each of these languages in college and graduate school and have also taught year-long classes on each subject. I offer efficient one-on-one tutoring to help students clear up difficult aspects of the languages and to provide practical study plans students can use on their own time to effectively improve understanding and use of these languages.

Chess -- I played the tournament chess circuit in my youth and appreciated the benefits it brings to cognitive ability and strategic thinking. I now enjoy helping other young people understand and enjoy this great game.

More About Me:

I graduated from Santa Clara University with a bachelor's in mathematics, though I explored many other subjects along the way. I then went on to graduate school where I studied ancient languages and literature and enjoyed bringing my more expressive and creative side to my educational experience. I was certified to teach middle and high school in South Carolina and enjoy teaching in a local Charleston school.

Learning and teaching are my favorite ways to spend time. I also enjoy running marathons (or trying, at least), playing chess and guitar, learning to cook, and hanging out with my husband, Jeff.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I have over seven years experience tutoring calculus with high school and college students at various levels. I understand not only the subject matter, but also how to explain it to someone for the first time and help apprehensive students become confident and successful.

I also have several years of experience tutoring students specifically in AP Calculus (both AB and BC).

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for the last six years. I now work professionally as a music pastor here in Portland. I have also led several groups of people in learning guitar, as well as tutoring students one-on-one.
